Greetings,
The album I'm really loving this week is Next
Plateau from N.O.H.A. (Noise Of Human Art) - a
German trio whose third release is a glorious mix
of beats, breaks, dub, jazz and funk. Each song
takes the listener on a journey to a different
musical locale and one is more than willing to go
along for the ride. It's on the Unique label and
is definitely worth seeking out.
I'm also pretty fond of Nighty Night: Deep Soul
In Dub from Weevie - a collection of dubbed-out
re-workings of songs by Chuck Jackson, Donovan,
Erykah Badu, Funk Inc., Zap Mama and many others.
According to Weevie's notes, each track was
recorded three or four times with live improvised
effects and many were slowed down for "an even
more stultifying drowsiness." You might want to
remain awake when listening, as the experience
will be much more rewarding.
While composing this note, I'm listening to
Dreams Of Water Themes from Adventure Time and
finding it pretty darn enjoyable. Daedelus &
Frosty team up for a totally left-field day trip
into uncharted regions of sound collage, spoken
word, interplanetary hip-hop and some chunky
beats. Guest vocalists Pigeon John, Saul Williams
and Sacajawea add to the fun and games, of which
there are many on this charming and goofy disc.
Beth Sereni's Kriztal label has been busy as
usual with a slew of excellent new compilations.
Nik Weston demonstrates why he's my go-to guy
when it comes to rare Japanese sides with Sakura
Aural Bliss - a nicely mixed set showcasing many
of the top names in electronica and dance music
from our neighbors in the Pacific rim. Vintage
Chill Volumes 3 & 4 seem to be targeted at wine
lovers, but this is music that can be enjoyed
anytime and it doesn't need storage in a cool
dark place. Each disc features an eclectic group
of musicians from around the globe, some familiar
- some not, but all representing the cream of the
current downtempo scene. There's also The
Reindeer Room Volume 2 - the second annual
downtempo Christmas album that this year,
contains a bonus DVD mixed in 5.1 surround with
video of a burning yule log. I refuse to listen
to Christmas music before Thanksgiving, so I
haven't heard it yet, but if it's anything like
last year's album, it will provide a fine
alternative to the traditional dreck that can
become ever so tiresome during the holiday season.
Time for me to bugger off and get some shut-eye.
Until next time......ciao for now,
David
