Newsflash 12. November 2003
Dear friends,
We remember to those times when we sent out the newsletters weekly and lots of you were wondering how we have the energy to write so much. Now the newsletters are written only monthly and indeed we need to have even more energy to handle all the radio affairs, party organising and travelling all around. But there are so many newsletters by now that you might don't mind if we don't waste your precious time but only once in a month. Since the last email we had three more Crate Soul Pressure nights with Enes Haracic (from Sarajevo), DJ Spider (Lyon) and Chris Goss (London). Those who checked out the nights left with big smiles on their face. Thank you guys for all the great music! Also big up to Rado, who runs a perfect little bar in Bratislava, Slovakia.
This week's reading is from King Jammy's by Beth Lesser, a lovely little book on the Jamaican reggae scene in the 1980s (2002, ECW Press). This gorilla thing takes so many shapes and forms we feel haunted:
"King Kong, the reggae gorilla began life as Kong Junior (his father, the original King Kong, being Kong Senior). 'He was an old soldier - a big thick man. And through them time there the King Kong movie did gwan them used to call him King Kong. So through me a the only son who him have whe deh ya mongst him the time, they did call me Junior Kong. Now, through me grow with the whole of the youth them and go around, the name just come offa him and eventually step on me.'
Despite the public opinion to the contrary, Kong still calls himself 'the ugly one' and insist 'Yes, I'm really ugly.' He even owns two frightening hairy gorilla suits to maintain the image. But although he may lack faith in his looks, he is sure of his singing talents. [.]
Kong is confident he can make it. 'I know for a fact that I'm going to be a star - a big star. And me na give up. I know the potential whe me have and what me can do. And me go do it. You only want to have faith and that a whe me have. Cause I've bee through the lowest and no give up.'"
