Greetings,
I'm sitting here listening to Duplex, the third
album from German producer Apparat (translation =
device) and a little blown away. Maybe this is
crazy talk, but it's one of the best electronic
albums I've heard this year. There is a lot of
creative programming going on, with layer upon
layer of various textures cajoling and caressing
each other. There are also proper songs - no
lyrics mind you, but a lot more than just rhythm
and sound (no disrespect to the label).
Comparisions might be made to Plaid, Squarepusher
(the early days) and Mum, but in the end, Duplex
winds up a very original and tasty recent
release. You'll find it on the Shitkatapult label
[http://www.shitkatapult.com/v3/ ]. Big up to
Steph at Triage who tipped me to this one.
Other stuff I like: Gerardo Frisina's Hi-Note
(Schema) is an outstanding album of dance-floor
jazz a la Nicola Conte and other members of the
Schema roster. The disc kicks from beginning to
end and so does the band, who play with great vim
and vigor.....Another full band project that you
must check out is Beatclub 21's album Maximum
Wellness (Infracom). This nine-piece ensemble
uses complex rhythm patterns as the centerpiece
of their music that roars and soars with the help
of vocalists Fola Dada and Nathalie Schäfer. This
is jazz of a different flavor - kind of like
crossing Micatone with Omni Trio. Also highly
recommended....Jamiroquai's contribution to the
LateNightTales (successor to the
AnotherLateNight) series is full of rare and
delicious, funky gems, the majority of which were
recorded in the mid-to-late '70s. Deep tracks
from Johnny Hammond, Skyy, Ashford & Simpson,
Kleer and others abound and are well-sequenced
for maximum soul power.
Compilation wise, there are two from L.A.'s
Sound In Color: Block Radius and the newest
release, Mu.sic - each of which collects prime
examples of the label's diverse roster. Lots of
lazy hip-hop, downtempo, jazz and Latin flavas
make for some very pleasant discoveries. Best
Seven Selections features singles and previously
unreleased material from friends and colleagues
performing inna dub and reggae stylee for this
German label.
As always, there are plenty more musical
surprises, so I hope you'll tune in live, or via
the archives listed below.
Until next time - ciao for now,
David
