STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
Last Friday night I caught probably the best drum and bass set I've heard
yet, thanks to the duo of DJ Patife and MC Cleveland Watkiss. It was such a
great party vibe and refreshing to hear a drum and bass DJ keep with the
soul/funk feel rather than the evil dark sounds, especially in Melbourne.
Friday afternoon was good to, having the guys drop into the studio for
Stylin. My apologies go out to the listener who called with a friendly
complaint that after playing a couple of minutes of "Sambassim", I said "I'm
jealous of anyone who's hearing this tune for the first time" and then
proceed to conduct the interview with Patife over the top! Since that tune
blew up around the world, Sao Paolo-based Patife has been touring the globe
and gracing more remixes with his soulful Brazilian take on drum and bass.
He's now working on an album which promises some amazing things like a drum
and bass version of the Jorge Ben classic "Que Pena", a collaboration with
bossa legends Trio Mocoto and a track with a 18-piece bloco/samba
school-style percussion ensemble.

Cleveland Watkiss will also feature on Patife's album, to add to his other
drum and bass collaborations with the likes of Makoto, XRS, D Kay & Epsilon.
Back in the mid-90s Cleveland was MCing for 2 groundbreaking club-nights at
the legendary Blue Note in Hoxton Square, London. Each night seemed to be
the focal point of its scene: Goldie's Metalheadz for drum and bass and
Talvin Singh's Anokha for the Asian underground. But when I talk about
Cleveland the MC, this is is still Cleveland the singer. "Traveller", the
song he recorded with Talvin was very high in my best of 1998 list. Going
back into the 80s reveals Cleveland's background singing jazz, soul and
gospel and working with Stevie Wonder. His latest album "Victory's Happy
Songbook" has come out through German label Infracom with remixes from the
likes of Patife and Soulpatrol.

Also on Infracom is this weeks guest, Volker Meitz, the Berlin keyboard
maestro and producer responsible for many Stylin classics of the last few
years.
until then
