Nathan Haines Feat Lyric L – Doot Dude (Chillifunk)
Cat No: CF060. Release Date: 6th October 2003. 12” Single.
This is easily the finest cut from Nathan’s recent “Squire For Hire” LP,
feating the dulcet tones of Lyric L, voice of Seiji’s manic “Loose Lips”.
Here the cut gets a much deserved single outing, and a reinterpretation from
remix don Ashley Beedle. The original is a half spoken half rapped
conversational account of Lyric L’s meeting with a possible Mr. Right, over a
startling analogue infected bass, new dawn keys and delighted synths.
Ashley’s ‘Buff Boy Vocal’ is a wonderfully different account of the meeting,
with roughly relaxed breaks, gorgeous keys, posh strings and Lyric L’s vocals
that are struck by the guy’s physical beauty.
Various – Mis-Shapes Vol. 2 (Odori)
Cat No: ODORI 021. Promo. 12” Single.
The mighty Odori stable delves into the murky waters of label rejection and
secret undercover releases, to recycle some hidden gems. It would be better
not to A.S.K. about the A side, but the flip shows that one man’s trash is
another’s goldmine. “0800 Jazz” is the best slice of broken jazz breaks
business to have been made north of the M25 in a long time, and without doubt,
it’s the finest record ever to feature key tones. Dial them up and get
connected for some spitting kicked beats, exploding cymbals, stupid yet fitting
phoning keys and a funny little sax line that pops up all over. “Sine Of The
Times” is more Chicago mid-80’s than anything to do with a freak who used to be
known as a squiggle, courtesy of pumped breaks, cheeky scratched synths, vocals
that have been chopped up beyond recognition and a proper acidic housed up
bassline.
Phlash 3000 – Chaos In The Boardroom (Estereo)
Cat No: 036. Release Date: October 2003. 12” Single.
Producer extroadionaire Phil Asher teams up alongside Rich Medina, one of the
most distinctive voices in the business, for some soul searching. Weighing in
at nearly twelve minutes, the ‘Extended Mix’ is probably a little long for its
own good. However, the quality of the cut cannot be doubted, as Rich speaks
out against problems of the world, over live drumming step ups, classy
comforting keys and a shadowy bass that dances in the dark. The ‘Instrumental’
lets faultless keys do their thing alongside intricate percussion, a bass that
sucks you in and a guitar that strums away nicely.
Swamburger feat Zano & DeuceLogic – Sun-Vibes (Eighth Dimension)
Cat No: 8TH016. Available Now. 12” Single.
This is a release to remind you of the barbecues, outdoor partiers and sun-
drenched holiday days of the summer. “Sun-Vibes” is a fun-loving celebration
of those times, with good-natured beats, party-time vocals, charming keys and a
smiling bass. “Love Inn” invites you to join Swamburger in a rather
provocative manner, for some lopsided beats, lazy keys and weighty bass
movements.
