    Greetings,

To begin, I wanted to mention that I'll be filling in for Harry
Duncan this evening in addition to doing my own program. His show In
The Soul Kitchen features a mix of roots, R&B and jazz and I'll be
doing much of the same, playing gems unearthed from my library. Since
"The Blues" is on PBS every night this week, expect to hear some of
my favorite musicians from the genre. In The Soul Kitchen begins at
8pm PT and FreeFall follows at 10pm.

Barring any last-minute problems, I expect German
multi-instrumentalist Praful to stop by during the first hour of
FreeFall and discuss his new album One Day Deep. It's been garnering
rave reviews across the globe and you'll find out why later tonight.

While on the the subject of global grooves, one of my favorite new
albums is Voz D'Amor from Cape Verde's own "barefoot Contessa,"
Cesaria Evora. Every note this woman sings is like pure honey and her
new disc continues in the vein of past releases - romantic, elegant
lyrics and arrangements that wrap themselves around her husky voice
like a glove. With the recent Club Sodade remix project creating new
interest in Ms. Evora, there is no better time than now to begin your
own love affair with her music.....whew! now I'm all worked up......

Another lady I've become fond of (and also from Germany) is Barbara
Morgenstern. Nichts Muss is her third album and continues her
explorations into melodic electronica. Subtle and nuanced,
Morgenstern's music conveys intensity without being abrasive, much in
the same way Bjork has crafted her compositions of late. This is
another one that's definitely worth seeking out.

Something else you might want to check out is a slew of new aural and
visual delights from Ninja Tune, available by visiting the FreeFall
    Web page (http://www.geocities.com/davidbassin/freefall.html). There
are new full-length videos from Homelife, Bonobo, Kid Koala and Jaga
Jazzist, as well as audio tracks from Mr. Scruff, The Herbaliser,
Treva Whateva and DJ Food's re-edit of "Pinball Number Count" from
Sesame Street. Just click on the Ninja Tune logo at the top of the
    page and enjoy!

Finally, it's been a rough month for music and movie fans with many
well-known entertainers passing away. Both Johnny Cash and Robert
Palmer made music that I loved for different reasons. Cash symbolized
the rough and tumble side of America. The pioneer, the outlaw, the
gunslinger who'd kick your ass if you looked at him the wrong way. He
also came to represent the part of the population without a voice -
the humble, the downtrodden and the misfit. He was our hero and meant
more to this country than George Bush ever will.

Palmer was cut from a different cloth. He was dashing, slick and wore
nice suits. He used the Meters and Little Feat on his early
recordings in the mid-seventies to create a marvellous amalgamation
of British pop and American funk. He dabbled in reggae, covered songs
by Gary Numan, Allan Toussaint and wrote some very sexy songs of his
own. He was a class act, a great musician and he died too young. I
think that's what bothered me the most. Cash was elderly and unwell -
I even began writing his obituary several years ago at another job,
during one of his serious bouts with pneumonia. Palmer (and John
Ritter) was closer to my age and his death was another cruel reminder
that our time here is not without limits. I will miss them both.

If you're local, you'll have another chance at winning a copy of
Verve Remixed 2, as well as tickets to see DJ Vadim & The Russian
Percussion Tour this Friday night at Milk. I hope you'll tune in.

    Ciao for now,
    David
