Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #107: Crank up the amps
Newsflash 5. October 2003
Dear friends,
Autumn days are passing by in a dizzying blur. We don't know whether it's been weeks since Prague's golden boy Standa (DJ Tall) was visiting Budapest or just some days. The Crate Soul Pressure is on. Indeed, after long months of inactivity, we seem to have sound the right venue for our club nights. This time fortnightly we are back with a vengeance at Mucsarnok Bistro (in the basement of Mucsarnok, the arts hall for contemporary art in Budapest). Teamed up with Erik Sumo and Lee n' Gum we present the depths of our record-crates. The first one went down promising despite almost no promotion. A mixed bag of heavy-weight funk breaks, deep jazz pressure, afro-futuristics and ghettoblaster shaking classic hip hop joints and just a little soulful samba was on the menu as usual. Heavy on the amp. The interior of the venue was completely altered by the projections of our VJs (Lee Unflyable and the Kiégo Izzók crew).
The idea has been to keep it at family level: to have a great time playing dusty grooves while our friends dance or chat. That worked out as planned: we couldn't leave the place before 4 AM. Hopefully we will have many more Friday nights like this there. You can check out the end of the newsletter for the list of guests that will play with us in the next weeks. By the way, if you happen to visit Budapest sometime soon, every other Friday our friends Suhaid, Haze and Captain Kaos holds down the place with their Brake! club-nights.
Has it really been a month since we last gave you any update on life at Budapest Zoo? It seems so, as we haven't even reported about our visit to Szeged. Home of the original Hungarian spicy fish soup, the infamous Pick salami, a nice bit of riverbank and the excellent Sambafrique boys Ko and Don Leon. Probably the best DJs we heard in a while. Not a tune that would turn us down! These local heroes have regular nights in "Sun City" as the local hip hop lingo marks the town. (B-boys came to get down by the end of the party :) Great crowd too.
We have also hang out with DJ Research (of the infamous Australian Research & Development dj duo) lately, who is studying at the same university where Shuriken teaches. Richard makes DJ Tall look short. He is like a feet higher than us but his crates are equally deep. Listen to his guest mix in our last radio show.
This week's short reading goes out about some guys from outer space:
"The time had now come to crank up the amps. By the late 1960s, Clinton had hooked up with high voltage Detroit Rockers The MC5 , The Amboy Dukes and Stooges, incorporating into his main outfits, Parliament and Funkadelic, the group dynamics of a heavy rock act. It gave Clinton's sly cartoon universe an agressive ritual edge. Early footage of Funkadelic in New York shows a member of a group near naked and painted up as Jacoub's white monkey beast, while Parliament's tales of extraterrestrial brothers declaring they had "returned to claim the pyramids" revealed that the main difference between Jacoub and Dr Funkenstein was one of attitude. "This boy was definitely out to lunch, " George Clinton once remarked of Sun Ra, who shared a bill with the MC5 in 1969, "the same place I eat at."

Go and get a lunch till next time!
