    Greetings,

As expected, Mr. Scruff stopped by last week with a bag full of new
and rare grooves from around the world and a cartoon-emblazoned
chef's apron for yours truly. The following evening, he and Spinna
threw down an awesome marathon set at Mezzanine to a wildly
appreciative audience. You can hear the interview and his eclectic
collection of chunes by checking out the FreeFall archives,
    RadioTake10.org, or NetMusique this week.

On Friday I went to check out the Gotan Project at the Fillmore and
was especially eager to see them after having missed their last
appearance a few months ago. Much to my surprise, the show was sold
out! I had no idea they were this popular in the Bay Area and that
was a pleasant surprise. Their performance was in a word, sublime.
Performing the first half of the set behind a scrim, images of lovers
and dancers were projected as both still and moving images, creating
a very sexy vibe. When the curtain finally fell, the band truly
connected with the audience who whooped and hollered at the start of
each familiar tune and for the outstanding solos taken on violin,
guitar, bandeon and piano. In addition to the tracks from their album
and EPs, two excellent new songs were performed for the first time
and the crowd responded warmly. Gotan Project have a few dates left
on the U.S. leg of their tour and if they're playing anywhere within
driving distance, I suggest you get your tickets right away. You
    won't be disappointed.

Good news for Windows users: Apple has finally released iTunes for
Windows, meaning that now all of you non-Mac users can experience one
of the best jukebox clients around. Not only can you now shop at the
iTunes store for new music, but you now have direct access to KUSF
and Netmusique's broadcast streams via the built-in radio tuner.
Download the latest client for both Windows & Mac at:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/.

Included in the new music planned for this evening is Comfort Woman -
the latest album from Meshell NdegeOcello. Touted as her "love"
album, this is slow and sexy stuff that's designed for bedroom
listening and is a far cry from Bitter. My only complaint is its
length - it clocks in at just under 40 minutes and if you are in fact
using it as background music in the boudoir, that's barely enough
time for the warm-up....if you know what I mean.

Meshell also turns up on Kish Kash - the new disc from Basement Jaxx,
on two very funky tracks. Other guests include Mercury prize winner
Dizzee Rascal and (gasp) Siouxsie Sioux! As you might expect, the
Jaxx invoke a party atmosphere on virtually every track and we will
no doubt be hearing many selections from Kish Kash at clubs
everywhere in the months to come.

I really like the new James Hardway album, Big Casino for its
excellent mix of breaks, house and downtempo grooves, all of which
are damn soulful. I was surprised (again) to learn that Hardway is a
pseudonym for David Harrow - a musician who worked extensively with
Anne Clark and the On-U Sound posse back in the '80s and who was also
a member of Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart. This is his
strongest release to date and is highly recommended.

We'll have tickets for Quantic's appearance at Club Six this Friday
night. I'm looking forward to finally meeting the boy wonder behind
some outstanding solo work, many excellent remixes and the funky
Quantic Soul Orchestra project. The Fresco crew will be in the house,
as will DJs Andrew Jervis and J. Boogie, so be sure to put this gig
on your agenda for the weekend.

That's all for this week - ciao for now!
    David
