    NEWS
The broadcast for Friday October 24 is now online. You can check the playlist for the show, as well. Details are in the playlist area down below.

Tonight's broadcast will feature the Urban Landscapes Guestmix from Hosptial Records, the duo Phuturistix. Zed Bias & Injekta are established musicians/producers in their own rights, and now they've collaborated for the debut album "Feel It Out," which was just released. They've recently put together a 30-minute mix to coincide with the release, and  you'll hear it this week. (Respect to Tom from Hospital for sending it to this side of the Atlantic.)

Next week on the show will be a special one-hour minishow to commemorate the release of Compost Records's "Ennio Morricone Remixes." It's the label's most ambitious project to date, spanning two volumes. Compiled by Florian Keller, you'll hear music from the project, as well as some of the contributors voicing their take on the project. Hear the minishow during the second hour of next week's broadcast.

    MUSIC REVIEWS FOR OCTOBER 2003
(as listed in the Reviews section of the Urban Landscapes web site)

    3 - I:Cube - Versatile CD (France)
"Music is everywhere" goes the beginning of "3," appropriately taking us on another round with French producer I:Cube. Two years after the release of of his excellent long player "Adore," he drops his follow-up long-player for Versatile. With the signature French house sound that one expects from him, his work reflects a more mature production sense. At times, he can be playful. But he also can form a complex layer of sounds when the need calls for it. It's a worthy follow-up that demands repeat listening in order to appreciate the added layers of sounds and dimensions. Check it, won't you?

Serious - Da Lata - Palm Beats CD-R (UK)
And how! Da Lata (Patrick Forge & Chris Franck) goes "Afrobeat-meets-Brazilian" on this track that builds into a, well, serious-ly booming monster that will make music lovers and world music fans go nuts! But watch out for Seiji from Bugz In The Attic, as he has a trick or two up his sleeves. He turns "Serious" into a dancefloor monster all its own by cleverly using parts of the vocals as percussion and adding some groovy bass and breaking up them beats as only the Bugz outfit can. Bounce, bounce, bounce baby! Look out for the 12" coming in November.

Shoot The Pianist - Inverse Cinematics - Fluid Ounce 12" (UK)
Pulver recording artists Inverse Cinematics comes up with a dope new 12" for Zero dB's Fluid Ounce label. There are two alternative versions of "Shoot The Pianist". The first version features some dirty-as-hell synth-bass that's downright nasty. A different take on the other side for some more trippy-ass action, as Part 2 with a sample piano riff throughout and some phat bass action to satisfy the bass whores out there (yours truly, included). Rounding it all off is "Pet Legs," a tune with some nice sampled jazzy drum percussions. This mother is fresh, indeed. Nice pick from the dB boyz, and nice work from the Pulver duo. Yes!

Different Drum - Phuturistix - Hospital 10" (UK)

A very different tack of the soulful drum n'bass stormer from Tony Colman's project from the Billion Dollar Gravy long-player featuring the vocals from Robert Owens. The Phuturistix boys (Zed Bias & Injekta) turns the tune into this one into a midtempo burner with a bit of a tasty Latin vibe, with Liane Carroll's vocals added for good measure. Check out the dubby side on the flip as the tune gets rubbed a bit...builds into a grooveshaka. Phat!

Supernova Sky - Similou - Dealers of Nordic Music CD-R (Sweden)
A Gonky pop record?? Indeed. When I visited Jol last January, he played for me a tune that he and Erik from Plej (who was also with us) have produced. Yukimi's vocals didn't take long to get noticed thereafter. It's certainly the two gifted artists branching into different territories, and yet "Supernova Sky" could cross over several boundaries. The title track, featuring Yukimi's warm vocals to full effect, is a soulful pop ballad that benefits from some excellent production. "Dreamwalk" is another ballad with, well, dreamy vocals (don't think it's Yukimi, but lovely just the same) and cool synth-bass work (again, with some deft production). Can Gonky pull off pop? Maybe they can! Find this one on a 12" and be happy.

Three Street Worlds - Two Banks of Four - Red Egyptian Jazz CD (
    UK)
Two years after the strong debut album "City Watching," Two Banks of Four return with its highly-anticipated follow-up. "Three Street World" is very much an album that was worth the wait, taking the group into more jazzier territory. But that in no way diminished the quality of its work. Rob Gallagher (aka Earl Zinger), Demus, Chris Bowden, Ski Oakenfull, Valerie Etienne...they're all back to create something special. A terrific slice of modern jazz that, like "City Watching," should hold up rather nicely over time.

Ennio Morricone Remixes Vol. 1 - Various Artists - Compost CD (Germany)
Italian composer Ennio Morricone, perhaps best known for composing the Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns of the 60s (and countless other soundtracks), is age 75 this year. To commermorate this milestone, Compost Records has embarked on what is unquestionably its most ambitious project to date. The result of which is the first of two Morricone albums of remixes from a who's who of producers from around the world. The list is numerous even on this first one, but International Pony's quirky and cute remix of "La Moda" (with some clever pop vocals) gets the collection off to a great start. Other notables include Swell Sessions, Needs, Butti 49, Hird, Alex Attias, and many others. The remixes really are top-notch, moving into deeper territory above the standard fare. Compost fans and music lovers won't be sorry for adding this gem to their musical collections. I'm looking forward already to Volume 2.

Slim's Return EP - Madlib - Blue Note 12" (USA)
If you have Madlib's excellent "Shades of Blue" project, don't let the fact that this EP has one of the cuts from the album fool you. In fact, this EP contains three new tidbits from the Madman himself. "Steppin' Again" has Madlib revisiting Donald Byrd's "Steppin' Into Tomorrow", with a much slower pace and the male chorus found on the original. "Dimples," for such a short cut, is absolutely massive...done handedly under Madlib's "Yesterday's New Quintet" identity. Not to be outdone is his mix-up of the previously unreleased track from the Mizell Brother's "Young Warriors." It's nine minutes of glorious jazz-funk that builds up to a rather satisfying conclusion. Yum!

Different Spaces EP - Flowriders - 4Lux CD-R (The Netherlands)

Fresh from receiving the phat Gerd remix of the tune "Different Spaces" comes the forthcoming EP from Amsterdam-based Flowriders. The original version of the title track kicks everything off, and it's a nice slice of jazz, grooves, and soem trippy effects that raises the cool factor a few notches. And for good measure, solid vocals. Then comes the Gerd mix where the beats are heavier, and the groove bouncier with some dope bass work. The icing is on the cake with NY's Michelle Davis doing the heartfelt singing to terrific effect. Then things get harder, as Bugz members Alex & Kaidi do their West London thang including a deeper bassline and those syncopated drums of delisght that makes broken beat what it is. The last track, "Writers on a Flow," is another original tune from the Flowriders and it gets tight and funky inna hip-hop style. Not sure who the rapper is. He, the background vocals, and the music blend together quite finely. 4Lux keeps the quality pressure moving and grooving.

Universal Love - Truby Trio - Compost 12" (Germany)
One of the cuts from the Truby's "Elevator Music" long player gets mixed up. The German house duo Tiefschwarz does another fine remix with an electrogroovyhouse mix with sparse vocals. On side B, Ame goes for a deep house vibe and is more generous with leaving much of hte vocals from the original in. For the dance floor, as well as for head-nodding. Nice.

Inevitable - Al-Haca Soundsystem - Different Drummer CD (UK)
This album instantly goes on my list as one of the contenders for album of the year; for sure, it's the best dub album I've heard in a long time. What better way to make a good album than to know what people will respond to, and the Al-Haca Soundsystem has been developing its craft for over 8 years by holding parties and clubs nights in its native Germany. All of its collective experiences comes to this, and it hits its stride early and often. The music here is well-done, and the many vocalists/toasters (both from the collective and guest artists) on here accentuate the collective's musical talents quite nicely. "Inevitable" should raise the bar for all future dub albums to come, and that's not saying it lightly at all. It's absolutely brilliant!

Remix EP - Heavenly Social - 4Lux CD-R (The Netherlands)
4Lux is definitely one of the freshest independent labels at the moment with its quality releases, and this one kicks the quality level up several notches. Season, fresh off their "Juice" tune featuring Gonky's Ernesto on vocals, Season gives a delicious broken beat mix-p on "State of Mind." Very much a can't-miss groover for the floor. The MFP collective also unleashes a deep and groovy uptempo mix of "Just Me"...you can just feel the warmth oozing over that one. No release date on this one yet, but look for this one to burn floors.

Open Rhythm System - The Beat Kids - Uncle Junior/7 Heads CD (USA)
When I've first listened to the Beat Kids's debut album "Open Rhythm System" back in July, I've handed it over to a friend to give a listen. It grew on her big time. It would be a couple of more months before I would have the chance to listen again, and I find that it's one of those projects that reveals nuances of its body of work with each listen. Guillermo Brown is the drummer for David. S. Ware's band, and has also worked with the likes of DJ Spooky, Spring Heel Jack, and others. If you want easy listening, this ain't it. At the same time, the album keeps itself accessbile enough to pull the listener in, drawing on a variety of styles from Trip-Hop to Acid-Jazz. Check out "Want," a eerie ballad featuring great vocals from Natasha Diggs in a style reminiscent of Portishead. Also check out the spoken-word track "Channel 9 Reprise." But check out this album on the whole because it's worth exploring. I need the vinyl now!

Waltz For Koop: Alternative Takes - Koop - JCR/Compost CD (Germany)
Oscar & Magnus, the Swedish boys known as Koop, have made an impact when "Waltz For Koop" was released on Jazzanova's JCR imprint last year. Since then, several remixes have surfaced on vinyl. Now those vinyl mixes, along with previously unreleased remixes, are part of "Alternative Takes." Previously-released vinyl nuggests now on CD includes Carlito, Patife, and Marcus Enochson. Among the new ones, my personal favorite is 2 Banks of Four
