Greetings,
A number of you have asked me if I ever take my butt outside of the radio station to spin in public. Since it is a rare occurrence these days, I'm happy to announce that I'll be opening for Amon Tobin and RJD2 this Thursday evening at Bimbo's. From 8:15-10pm, I'll be showing our special guests how we throw down in the city by the Bay. But seriously folks, if you're planning on coming down to the show, please stop by and say hello.
As for music reviews, I thought I had it all figured out last night when I wrote up a brief review of the outstanding new album from Los Chicharrons (When The Sun Goes Down). I was going to say that on their third album, Ramon Santana and Morten Hansen create a delightfully schizophrenic mix of bluesy downtempo and hip-hop alongside more house-y and Latin-disco-tinged floor fillers. Although I've been a fan of their previous work, they've really outdone themselves this time and I sincerely hope that they find their audience with this release.
Since I was going to the Giants game, I thought that would be it, as there weren't a lot of new albums to review. However, when I got home Monday evening, I had a huge mound of packages on my doorstep and had to mention a few of the tidbits inside, if only so briefly.
Remix albums are all the rage now and I got three today. The first was a sampler of the forthcoming Astor Piazolla Remixed Project due out in October on Milan. The disc contains re-interpretations of the tango master's work by 4 Hero, Koop, Alexkid and Zeb, while the full release will include additional tracks by Nuspirit Helsinki, John Beltran, Little Louie Vega and others. Then there's Bird Up - the Charlie Parker Remix Project with re-rubs by Hal Wilner, Rob Swift, Dan The Automator, Me'shell NdegeOcello and El-P to name a few. Finally, Koop's Waltz For Koop: Alternative Takes features new creations from Hird, Nicola Conte, DJ Patife, Richard Dorfmeiser and others.
Other new albums include Sonic Trance - a fascinating new work from trumpeter Nicholas Payton, David Bowie's Reality, the soundtrack to Lost In Translation, featuring new compositions from My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields, Glamoured from Cassandra Wilson and Untinted: Sources Of Madlib's Shades Of Blue. Sonar Lodge's "Celsius" gets remixed by Domu and Max 404, Stigmato Inc. is worked over by Kaskade and Rithma, Seiji works his magic on Steppah Huntah - a new 12" on Compost, along with Ben Mono being manipulated by John Tejada, Landslide and Dharma One.
Needless to say, I've got my work cut out for me.....see you next week.
Ciao for now,
David
