Greetings,
And the remix projects just keep on coming......last week I mentioned three new tribute / remix albums and tonight a couple more are worth investigating. First is The Myth Lives On - A Sun Ra Tribute from the UK's Kindred Spirits label. Some of you may have heard recent singles from Theo Parrish or Yesterday's New Quintet covering Mr. Re's tunes and the good news is, they're all here. This is a truly gorgeous, lush work with new interpretations from King Britt, Offworld (Kirk Degorgio), Recloose and others. I liked Mustang's version of "Nuclear War" so much, that I spent a few minutes re-editing the dirty bits so that we could make sure it was air-friendly - it's that good.
The other project is much closer to home....S.F.'s own Wide Hive label remixed 16 tracks from their back catalog, or rather handed it off to others to do and the results are truly excellent. Artists such as Dissent, DJ Zeph, Calvin Keys and Variable Unit are elegantly massaged by the likes of Tommy Guerrero, Ge-ology, Ticklah, Djinji Brown, Kaskade and many more, who take the music into the darker side of hip-hop, house and beats on the down low. The October release date has been pushed back a month, so you'll be getting a real sneak peak in the weeks to come.
Speaking of downtempo, I really like Jazzelicious Presents - a new compilation on the Kriztal label offering a dozen ways to chill, thanks to a number of talented artists I've never heard of before. Jazzelicious, Maya F.S., Zigo and Groove Matter drop some easy beats and laid-back vibes that are guaranteed to put anyone in a good mood, without the need of any leafy, organic matter (not that it would hurt).
Ubiquity have finally released Neighborhood Science - the debut release from Detroit's John Arnold and it's dope as heck. Featuring appearances by fellow Motor City residents Amp Fiddler and Ayro, Arnold lays down some fast and dirty beats that are a little bit techno, a little bit rock & soul. If you haven't yet heard "Rough," "Anaconda," or "Get Yourself Together," you need to go to your local music emporium or hop online and order this today.
More delights await this evening, including more copies of Verve Remixed 2 to give away, along with tickets to see Pole this Friday night at Club Six.
Until next time, ciao for now,
David
