It's shaping up to be a busy week with a screening of Kill Bill Vol.
2 tonight, The Bad Plus at Yoshi's on Wednesday and Bowie on Saturday
at Berkeley Community Theater.
Tidbits for the show this evening include a new single from Gerardo
Frisina with stormin' new reworks of music from Euro jazz-meisters
Sabu Martinez & Sahib Shihab. "African Seeds" and "Latin Seeds"
nearly knocked me out of my chair on first listen. Now I have to drag
out my copy of Sabu's Sorcery and check the original versions....Slow
Train Soul is Morten Verano and Lady Z who some might liken to a
modern Eurythmics. Their jazzy funk and hip-hop boasts great melodic
sense and some excellent vocalese from Ms. Z. Their album is entitled
Illegal Cargo, available on Tommy Boy Records.....Signal To Noise is
the new album from Kabuki (aka Jan Hennig), who with his partner
Mainframe, also records under the pseudonym of Megashira and Makai.
In addition to his signature drum & bass stylings, he drops some
Detroit-inspired techno and a hint of the beat we call broken. More
info at www.combination-rec.de....The Isley Brothers are the subjects
of a new remix project called Taken To The Next Phase
(Reinterpretations) that's out in June. An advance 12" sampler
contains four tracks re-worked by the Ignorants, Esthero, Lenky (Sean
Paul producer) and ?uestlove and I'm sure I'll have a difficult time
deciding which one to play...
That's a taste of what's in store - I hope you'll join me.
Ciao for now,
David
