Greetings,
Program note: Next week (4.27) I'll be filling in for Harry Duncan
and his In The Soul Kitchen show from 8-10pm, with a new edition of
FreeFall immediately following. Expect large doses of soul, jazz,
blues and some additional surprises I've been saving for this
occasion. That's Tuesday, April 27th - four big hours of music from
8pm-midnight, live on 90.3FM, or via Live365 and/or your iTunes
player.
Some of the fine new music scheduled for tonight includes:
60 Channels: Covert Movements - The Angel returns with her first new
album in several years and commands production, arranging and mixing
duties. Guest artists include Monday Michiru, Rain Phoenix, DJ
Collage, Navigator and others, contributing to the dark dub, drum &
bass and sinuous rhythms that percolate throughout every song.
Intuit: Intuit - Flora Purim, Airto, Andy Bey and Doug Carn join
Thomas Braun and Till Maragnoli for some inspired Brazilian, funk and
soul on their debut full-length for Compost. There are a couple of
Fela-inspired Afro-jams ("Fentola" & "Wewa") that demand you get your
groove on without delay. On "Western Sunrise" and "Planet Birth," Bey
contributes his signature smokey vocals and on "Bubblin' Jam," Braun
lays down some cool vibes while Carn tickles the ivories for a
swingin' lounge number. A most excellent collection.
B&B International: Hobbylab - The enigmatic Danish duo are also
celebrating the release of their first album with parties in
Copenhagen this week. Hobbylab draws from elements of downtempo, dub
and hip-hop, with its own style and originality. There are some deep,
deep grooves on this disc that will devastate a dance floor, radio
show or even your living room. More info at: (www.bbinternational.dk).
Prince: Musicology - Sounding more like his mid-late '80s self,
Prince drops one of his strongest works in years. Pretty much a
one-man affair, Musicology gets seriously funked up and lovesexy,
while keeping a lid on the overt sexuality of the past. It's in shops
beginning today.
Idiom Creak: Room From Another Music - Michael Rosen's second release
aka Idiom Creak continues his explorations into the dark side of
hip-hop, sampling and audio manipulation. Sounds and conversation
drift in and out of the mix, voices are rarely heard in their normal
state and off-kilter melodies stagger around the tracks like a Vegas
drunk attempting to find his suite at the MGM Grand. Buy Room...,
then go to the website to download another "secret" album.

Cay Talan: Su - From Vienna's Couch Records (home to Dzihan & Kamien)
comes a truly wonderful new recording from DJ / producer Cay Talan
who has his uncle to thank for introducing him to the world of vinyl,
as well as nightclubs and turntables. With the D&Z seal of approval,
Su ('water' in Turkish) continues the fine Vienese tradition of lazy,
jazzy, sexy beats with a bit of reggae in the mix. Listening to the
album for the first time was a real treat, as each new tune seemed to
outdo the one preceding it. More info at (http://couchrecords.com).
Upcoming Bay area shows include Joe Zawinul at the Palace Of Fine
Arts on Wednesday and LTJ Bukem at Ruby Skye on Thursday - tune in
for tickets.
That's all for this week - ciao for now!
David
