Hola,
One of the best reissues I've heard all year would have to be James
Brown's Soul On Top - a 1969 recording made with the Louis Bellson
Big Band that finds the Godfather reworking standards like "September
Song" and "Your Cheatin' Heart" alongside hits of his own, such as
"Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," "There Was A Time" and " It's A Man's,
Man's, Man's World.' Brown is quoted as saying, "At heart I've always
been a jazz man," and he proves it without a doubt here. Bellson and
band are on fire as they blaze their way through Oliver Nelson's
arrangements and match Brown's unstoppable energy throughout. This
is a great disc and highly recommended.
In the huge pile of new music being hauled down to the station
tomorrow night is a new EP from Mark De Clive Lowe and a teaser for
his forthcoming full-length, debut albums from Scandinavia's
Ernesto's, Josee (the lovely vocalist who was featured prominently on
Hefner's Residue) and Jaga Jazzist's Lars Hornveth who plays a myriad
of instruments on his disc, Pooka. Madlib is back with a tribute to
Weldon Irvine under the pseudonym of Monk Hughes & The Outer Realm,
and there's more jazzy bizness with Volume 2 of Gilles Peterson's
Impressed series that collects rare British gems from back in the day.
There are also EPs from Mini Groove Orchestra, Liquid Loop, Ben Human
and Xavier Fischer Trio, who also have their own collection of
remixes done by Raw Deal, Phoneheads, Maxwell Implosion, Nicola Conte
and others and much, much more. I hope you'll tune in!
Until next week, ciao for now,
David
