Greetings,
If you missed last week's super-funky mix from NickNack, you can
catch the broadband replay all this week on Live365 and NetMusique.
Listener reaction was off the hook, so don't miss your chance to
check out his turntable skills in this outstanding set.
Here's some of the new music piled high upon my desk:
Perry Hemus: Rhodesmode - A few weeks ago I was overjoyed to discover
the first single from this album (also the title track) was not only
a swell tune heavily infused with sweet Latin rhythms, but the lyrics
to the "Freefall Mix" were so perfect, it could easily become the
theme song for the show. After listening to the whole disc, I was
blown away by the quality of the songwriting and the musicianship.
Perry most certainly knows his way around the Fender Rhodes and does
double-duty on bass, assorted Moog-based instruments and percussion.
Lizzy Parks is a wonderful vocalist and adds just the right touch to
his jazzy compositions, as do the other members of the ensemble. On
the inside cover, it says "organic shades of jazz" and that's the
truth, Ruth. For more info, check the Web page:
www.woodlandrecords.com. Highly recommended!
Meat Beat Manifesto: In Dub - As much as I appreciate Meat Beat's
music, I've often felt that much of it was a bit heavy for FreeFall.
In Dub changes all that by using last year's R.U.O.K. as a
jumping-off point for some far out dub excursions-on-the-versions,
along with a handful of new tracks. Local toaster DJ Collage lends
his vocal skills to five songs, giving them an authentic mash-up
vibe. There is also a second edition of the album released on DVD in
5.1 surround sound with accompanying visuals by Ben Stokes. I haven't
heard this one yet, but I have no doubt that those of you with the
right gear and a supply of organic enhancements will dig it the most.
V/A: Blue Note Revisited - In recent years, labels like Verve and
Blue Note have graciously allowed many of our favorite producers and
DJs to scour their vaults in search of material (both classic and
obscure) to for remix projects, some more radical than others. Hot on
the heels of Madlib's foray into the Blue Note catalog comes
Revisited - 13 new interpretations from the likes of Osunlade, Jay
Dee, 4 Hero, Kenny Dope, Kyoto Jazz Massive and others. Jazzanova add
a slightly metallic edge to the slow funk of Eddie Gale's "Song Of
Will," Bugz In The Attic get all Earth, Wind & Fire on the first half
of Gene Harris' "Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong," then bring the tempo
up into broken-beat territory. Matthew Herbert takes Michel
Petrucciani's "Caravan" in to his familiar world of jazzy glitch-pop,
and DJ Spinna softens and extends the structure of Donald Byrd's
"Lansanna's Priestress." Nice stuff - look for it in April, but hear
it now on FreeFall.
We'll also take a listen to the new Arthur Russell reissue on Soul
Jazz, check out some gorgeous electronic soul from Telefon Tel Aviv,
sneak a peek at the new Quant CD, Getting Out and have a go at some
recent singles.
Until next week - ciao for now,
David
