Jon Freer’s Club Reviews. Yam Who at Phonetics, Club Element/PoNaNa, Sheffield. February 7th 2004.

Yam Who have been responsible for bringing back the romance and art to a bootleg culture bled dry by the pointless blurring of two ill-suited tracks, the fall out from Richard X et al’s pop-swiping soundclashes. They have shown there still is an art to reworking other people’s records, be it in a legitimate, or unlawful fashion. Overhauling sweet soul diva’s and relaxed Hip Hoper’s, the pair have set them to gorgeously instrumented and richly musical backings. One half of the mysterious duo (Yam not Who, if you must ask!) made the trip for his Sheffield debut, backed by Nick Matthews, owner of the impressive Best Kept Secret agency, and trusty resident, Danny Mager.

The combination of an electrifying atmosphere, a clued-up varied crowd and the soul invigorating music made this a night to remember. Yam and Nick took over from Danny at 12, whose final cut was J*Star’s cheeky “No Diggity”. The pair then treated the crowd to a three hour set of brilliantly structured mind-blowing party music. As expected, Yam dropped a few naughty re-rubs, alongside an astonishing well-chosen selection of feelgood music. The wealth of wonderful tracks included the dazzling “I See The Sun” from the gospel-minded Axis Choir, Shade Of Soul’s extremely flirtatious “Give In To Me” and Sylvester’s heart-stopping “Over & Over”. Nick Matthews, who set up his agency as a result of his own DJing endeavours, also provided a tip-top selection, mixed with perfect precision. Nick’s platters of choice included Alex Phountzi’s sparkling revision of Banda Favela’s “Samba 2150”, Chicago’s floor demolishing “Streetplayer” and Drumagick’s infectious “Easyboom”. Always w!
ith an ear to the underground, Phonetics have once again shown their talent for booking those who can capture the hearts and minds of Sheffield’s clubbing fraternity.
