Howdy,
One of this week's most interesting releases would have to be Tangle
Eye - Alan Lomax's Southern Journey Remixed - a selection of field
recordings made in the '40s and '50s by the late musical historian
and updated by Scott Billington and Steve Reynolds, a New
Orleans-based production team. Using vocal samples taken from Lomax's
Library of Congress recordings, the duo have surrounded them with
groove-laden melodies, often augmented by additional musicians,
including Corey Harris, Delfayo Marsalis and fiddler Rob Ickes. There
are some surprises, such as the reggae riddim built around "Chantey,"
or the full-blown house mix of "Soldier." If you thought Moby's
"Natural Blues" was innovative, just wait until you hear Tangle Eye.
Jazztronik: Nana-Iro - Japan's Ryota Nozaki and co. are back with
another beautiful set of jazzy house and bossa-infused beats. The
melodies are sweet and so are the vocals that stop just short of
being sappy. Of course Nozaki gets to nail a couple of terrific piano
solos, adding a touch of elegance to the entire package. As of today,
it was available via mail order from Dusty Groove.
The Dining Rooms: Versioni Particolari - Ever since I heard the
Cinematic Orchestra's remix of "Fluxus" and learned a full disc of
re-works was in the offing, I was eager to hear the final result and
I'm happy to say I'm not disappointed. Will Holland's Quantic Soul
Orchestra turns "You" into an old-skool funk fest, the Fragment
Orchestra transforms "Tunnel" into a jazzy-dance floor stormer and
Four Tet's interpretation of "Cosi Ti Amo" is typically glitchy and
more experimental in nature. As remix projects go, this is one of the
best.
The Strike Boys: Playtime - Now recording for Stereo Deluxe, the
Strike Boys show some major musical growth since their last release.
Playtime is brimming with liquid funk, breakbeats galore, dubwise
riddims and even a touch of 2-step. Stylistically, there's a lot of
ground covered here, but that makes for a very interesting collection
that's solid from beginning to end. Now I'm looking forward to
hearing the 12" mixes.
That's the news, so now ya know.....until next week, ciao for now!
,
David
