NEWS
Recently, there's been an interesting period where we've needed to switch web hosting services due to the spotty performance of the previous host. As a result, you might have experienced broken links and what have you. All should be working now, so hopefully we won't need to go through this period for a long time.
Because we've gone through growing pains during the transition period, it was best to work everything out first. Also, the mailing list had to be transferred and it took a bit of time to do. So big ups to Elliot for pulling everything together.
LOTS GOING ON
Lots of info is loaded into this jam-packed edition of the circular, so please take your time reading it if you don't wish to do so in one sitting. In addition to the playlist for Urban Landscapes Radioshow 7.5 (with the week's Urban Landscapes Guestmix from Mark Springfield of the Fluid Ounce label) and 7.6 (featuring Denver's DJ Fog's Urban Landscapes Guestmix), you'll find my new picks for Feburary (chosen late January), lots of new muisic reviews, and more.
THE URBAN LANDSCAPES RADIOSHOW 7.6:
UNDER COVER
Like we've done about this time last year, Urban Landscapes has joined with much of the programming on Cal Poly's KCPR 91.3 FM last week playing cover tunes. Last year was a three-hour broadcast, but this year has been shaved to about 45 minutes or so due to a previously-scheduled Urban Landscapes Guestmix.
THE URBAN LANDSCAPES GUESTMIX PRESENTS:
DJ FOG
The Urban Landscapes Guestmix segment brings you some of the finest mixes from around the globe. Some of the most talented artists, producers, labels and DJs worldwide have delivered some quality mixes over the last few years, and it's great to get them (and the music) exposed to a wider audience.
Yet, there are unsung heores who are not as well-known, and yet they are just as vital in ensuring that the quality music reaches out to new audiences. This is the case with the DJ whose mix was chosen for Urban Landscapes Radioshow 7.6.
Based in Denver, Colorado, DJ Fog has been spinning wax since 1992. He's hosted weekly events, focusing on eclectic sounds such as acid jazz, neo-soul, hip-hop, and nujazz. He has also fronted Denver's longest running jungle weekly since 1997, and prides himself with playing "with live musicans & mc's long before it became a staple in 'acid jazz bands'."
You can find out more on DJ Fog via these links:

The complete playlist for his mix set, along with the Under Cover edition of the radioshow, can be read below.
MUSIC REVIEWS
Quant - Tryin'/Chills 'n Thrills 12" (Ecco Chamber)----
Available: February 26
Ecco Chamber is a Vienna-based label that has cemented a well-earned reputation, adding Gonky-based don Jonas Quant to its roster. "Tryin'" is soulful and warm, aided nicely by crooner Ernesto's vocals. Remixes of the tune come courtesy of Brighton's Quantic & Rotterdam's Gerd. "Chills N'Thrills," has Jazzinho's Guida de Palma lending her chops against Quant's signature funk vibes. With his second album in tow, look for the father of Gonkyburg to leave his mark.
Clara Hill - Restless Times (Sonar Kollektiv)
Available: Now (Europe); March 9 (U.S.)
Clara Hill has been lending her vocals on many a Sonar Kollektiv project, working on several with the mighty Jazzanova. So it's quite fitting that the Jazzanova influence carries over into her debut album "Restless Times" for the group's label. Steep in generous amounts of soul (especially the "neo" kind), the album is aided in no small part from above average production from members of Jazzanova, most notable the two making up Extended Spirit. There's no escaping their undercurrents, but it's only a compliment to Hill's writing and vocal talents. Some will accuse the producers of attempting to put too much into one album; I'd say to just allow yourself to experience and enjoy the music for a more enriching experience.
Quant - Getting Out (Ecco Chamber)
Available: February 23 (Europe)
The father of Gonkyburg Jonas Quant really does come through with his second long-player, building up on the strength of his Funkster EP and developing a signature groovy/bassy sound that shines. The album explores a variety of different sounds, but make no mistake that he leaves his mark well. With repeated listening, you too will get it when you find out that Quant has crafted his sound very well.
Alison Crockett - U R (Yam Who Remix) 12" (Wah Wah)
Available: Now
The kind folks at London's Wah Wah, known more for its 7" singles, releases its first 12" from singer/songwriter Alison Crockett. Yam Who gives "U R" a bit of warmth with a hint of old-school soul. The B-side, "Alive," is a groovy mid-tempo
stirrer of a tune with terrific overall production that can give today's neo-soul producers a run for their money. Definitely a keeper here.
Murr - Girl Gone West EP (Public Transit)
Available: now
From Toronto comes new work from Murr, collaborating with Rustic Hut. Some broken future soul pervades "Fall Apart" in the right ways. "Watching You" gets heavier on the beats with deep synth bass that funks the tune up into a floor stomper, and "See You Again" goes the broken beat route with syncopating rhythm, tough basslines, and a bit of sonic noises here and there. Yes, Canada knows how to get its groove on.
Alison Crockett - On Becoming A Woman
(Sol Image/Wah Wah)
Available: Now
Why the majors haven't picked up this singer is beyond me, so perhaps they should take a second look. The woman whose vocals graced many a tune by other artists, one of which was the crooning of Landslide's "It's Not Over," comes on her own. Released late last year, "On Becoming A Woman" is a nice body of work that is a terrific showcase for Crockett's skills. It also helps that the production on her album is on point. She's showing the world that she's a very capable vocalist, backed with wonderful musical support from all fronts. What soul!
Perry Hemus - Rhodesmode (Woodland)
Available: now
What a debut! London-based artist Perry Hemus merges smooth sounds, funky feelings, and spacious shades of color on his "Rhodesmode" debut. The album is just total musical bliss, filled with warm Fender and Moog keys and organic sounds that are
accessible and inviting. Too many good tunes on this one to mention, but the album is an excursion that's a treat to embark on.
V/A - Practice Avoiding Mistakes (Tokyodawn)
Available: February 24
Don't sleep on this compilation from Germany's Tokyodawn Records. Based on the "open-source" music website featuring a variety of artists's works available for free download, "Practice Avoiding Mistakes" seems to take its title seriously with a variety of hip-hop, neo-soul and other deep soundscapes. The results is a fine collection of music from around the world, and a fine one at that.
**More reviews coming next week**
WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE IN MIAMI
It's getting closer and closer, as we move toward the Winter Music Conference in Miami. For those who aren't familiar with the event, it's one of the largest gatherings of DJs and dance music industry professionals in the world (some would say that it's one big party, and that's very true too).
I will be attending the conference, and should return not only with bunches of new music, but also plan to do interviews as well. I'm already set to meet some artists, labels, and others. If you plan to attend and wish to hook up, drop me a line at mail@urbanlandscapesshow.com.
FIN
Watch for the upcoming circular to find out who'll be the next Urban Landscapes Guestmix for 7.8, my last broadcast before Miami. It's a name that hasn't been heard in awhile, and he's about to put his new release out on a label that we haven't heard much from last year. Watch out!
