Hey there,
No earth-shattering news or views to impart this week, but I do have
an interesting opportunity for some of the musicians who may be
reading this. The innovative belly-dance troupe UltraGypsy is hoping
to find someone who knows their way around the world of electronic
music to help out with a little pro bono work. If you think you might
be interested, check out their site: http://www.ultragypsy.com and
hit me back with your info. I'll pass it on to the appropriate party
and you'll be in receipt of good karma.
Introspection or shrewd marketing ploy? Ninja Tune has just released
their first real "greatest hits" compilation - Zen CD, a double disc
package containing 32 sterling examples of some of the most memorable
musical moments from the past decade. For most labels, that would
have been enough, but not these guys....A second set - Zen Rmx,
compiles many of the noteworthy remixes released in past years, along
with several making their debut here. But wait, there's more: the Zen
TV DVD features over two hours of "the best and strangest" Ninja Tune
videos - 34 in all, along with a Hexstatic video 'mash-up,' and an
artwork gallery. What's particularly endearing about these clips, is
the fact that they were made with the tiniest of budgets, yet are
able to impart a vision that perfectly complements the music to which
they're tied to. For a preview, visit the FreeFall low-fi Web site
(http://www.geocities.com/davidbassin/freefall.html) and click on the
Ninja Tune logo for an audio-video preview.
The debut CD from Federico Aubele - Gran Hotel Buenos Aires arrived
the other day, and it's a beaut. This native Argentinian began his
solo work by laying down tracks and samples from his record
collection, then overdubbing his guitar lines. In the end, Aubele
wound up recording all the parts himself, with the exception of the
vocals that were handled by a number of female friends. The result is
a warm, gentle disc that sounds at once urban and organic. Even
though the lyrics (and lyric sheet) are all in Spanish, that doesn't
detract from the listening experience, even if one can't understand
the meanings. The guitar work is lovely, as are the arrangements and
the vocals. Worth checking out.
Finally, some of you may have heard about the controversy surrounding
The Grey Album - the juxtaposition of Jay-Z's vocals from The Black
Album and the backing tracks that were sampled and re-constructed
from the Beatles' White Album. It's an interesting, if not completely
successful experiment in combining the two styles, but that's just
the beginning. After pressing up and distributing 3000 copies for
retail, Danger Mouse made the album available for free on the
Internet. EMI Music (the Beatles' label) was very unhappy by these
actions and ordered an cease and desist to prevent further
distribution. As a response to the corporate "strong-arm tactics,"
Tuesday the 24th (today) has been designated as a day of protest.
Dozens of Web sites have agreed to host the album, making it
available for download by anyone who chooses to. Other sites have
agreed to "go grey" in support of these actions. If you'd like more
information and/or would like to participate, point your browser to:
http://www.greytuesday.org/. You'll find download links, the list of
sites taking part and java script to turn your site grey.
Unfortunately, some of the language used on the album is forbidden by
the FCC, so FreeFall will voice its support in silence.
So I started out by saying I had no news and look where we wound
up.....hmm. OK, this is it for this week - I swear. Until next time,
ciao for now!
David
