STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
In the late 70s, when I was falling off monkeybars and playing in sandpits,
Paul Murphy was a pioneering force behind a new movement in the London club
scene called "jazz dance". This scene soon took off globally and was central
to the early careers of DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Nicola
Conte, United Future Organisation, Bob Jones and Rainer Truby, to name a
few. Paul ran the Palladin label in the mid 80s, releasing the hugely
successful "Venceremos" by Working Week, perhaps the only tune ever made for
the jazz dance scene to break the UK pop charts. After a few years away from
music in Ireland, Paul returned to London in the 90s to resume his DJing
career and soon started releasing his own productions on the Afro Art label.
Afro Art was started by Ashley Beedle - himself a big jazz dance fan - but
Paul is now helping to run the label since Ashley left to concetrate on
X-Press 2. Last year Afro Art had a big release with Spiritual South's
massive "Green Gold". Spiritual South's Mark Robertson is a fantastic DJ who
lived in Sydney a few years ago, but Paul assures me the tune was named
after the Brazilian flag, rather than Australia's sporting colours. For his
mix, Paul treated us to a selection of forthcoming and never-to-be-released
goodies, including a Spiritual South remix of his own "Jazz Room", one of my
favourite Afro Art tracks from a few years back. Paul promises to have his
album finished later this year, which should be something very special on
the basis of the tasters he gave like his great new version of "7 Samurai".

Well it feels good to be back for the 04, more Stylin than ever. Also back
tonight is Open Sesame at Honkytonks: Kano and I throwing down some serious
old and new groovers with special guest Chris Gill of Northside Records, who
played a serious latin, funk n boogaloo set last time he dropped in.
Apologies for all the roster shuffling with the show, but I couldn't say no
to having Sydney producer and DJ Deepchild join me in person for tomorrow's
show. He's doing a set at Honkytonks tomorrow night.
until then
Ennio Styles
