    bob,

    1. not all college students refuse to buy music from
legitimate sources. in fact many students LIKE buying
music. i used to work for a music store that had a
shop at a major university (UCLA) and on release days
there would be lines out the door of kids buying the
releases at NEW prices, although the store sold used
    cds too.

    2. recording artists have many ways of making money,
not merely album sales. there's music licensing,
which is how moby became a household name--his tracks
were placed in ads, movies & tv shows AND THEN people
went and bought the cd (play). nick drake (rip)
re-started his career about 20 years after his death
    due to a well-placed track.

    3. those same students that your acquaintance assumes
"steal" music, are the same people that fill live
venues seeing their favorite artists perform, then buy
their shirts, hats & other merchandise--another great
    revenue stream for the artists.

    4. would you REALLY give $100 to some shady person you
don't know on the corner for ANYTHING??? while
there's many that would, i think there's more that
wouldn't. a heathy sort of skepticism, i think.
