see, we were talking about music in response to the
original post. i didn't think i needed to clarify
    that.

if you think that i only know hiphop thru rapping,
then you assume WAY too much. btw, you forgot
    BEATBOXING. hello.

the dj in my email addy isn't there to be cute.
i know the elements of hiphop culture.

i remember life before hiphop. i remember when an mc
(master/mistress of ceremonies) was just the person
announcing what was going on. i remember when a dj
was only famous if he was on the radio and scratching
a record meant you had to buy another one. i remember
when soul train was THE show you watched to find out
what was up. i remember when people would "base" on
each other and "capping" later on.
when i first heard "planet rock," i already knew what
    the breaks were from.

once people started putting out records of hiphop
music the seeds of materialism and misogyny first
start to appear in a documented form. the main two
    boasts from mcs were:

    1. i'm better because i have more WOMEN than you
    2. i'm better because i have more MONEY than you

are they calling women b'ches or ho's? not exactly,
but they are talking about them like possesions...
and there is an emphasis on financial status. it's
not as overblown as we have now, but it's there.

most of the songs weren't about anything substantial,
just party music--like now. the scale is just larger
    now.

sounds like YOU forgot what hiphop is and was.

that's not equal to saying it's not hiphop music. in
most genres you have music that is instrumental (in
this case dj tunes--which precede "turntablism"), and
music that's vocal (in the hiphop world that would be
    "rap")

just because you disagree w/someone's stance doesn't
invalidate them as a hiphop artist. premier makes
music that is equally hiphop whether the track is for
    guru or jay-z.
