STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)
Hello all
Finally I was able to bring you the live set and interview with Swedish
beatmaker Forss last week. For those of you not familiar with the Sonar
Kollektiv artist, his music is perhaps best described by 2 of his song
titles: "Soulhack" and "Funk for Nerds". Forss takes his source records and
shatters them like glass, reassembling the fragments on his laptop and
passing it all through the moody funk filter. (Huh?) The live set treated us
to some more uptempo vibes than are present on his album, and from the
interview and his early demos, there's more to come in that vein. Look out
very soon for a killer remix he has done of the Horst Jankowski piano
classic "Speechcraft" as part of the MPS remix series. He studies philosophy
too and is really into computers. Check out his site.

We also had Trainspotters' Corner back last week with the killer new tune
from another Swede, Beatfanatic. Electromagnetic is out soon on Mad Mats'
Raw Fusion label and combines bits of 70s Brazil and Cuba with a little mid
90s New York sax. Lucky you, Mad Mats will guesting on Stylin in 2 weeks and
visiting Melbourne the week after that.
But there's lots to get through in the meantime. This Sunday the first Good
Vibrations Festival hits Melbourne with a killer lineup including former
Stylin guests Gilles Peterson and Bugz in the Attic, tomorrow's Stylin guest
DJ Premier (with Gang Starr) as well as the likes of Blackalicious, Nitin
Sawhney, Lee Scratch Perry & Mad Professor, Tom Middleton, Moloko, Soul II
Soul Sound System and some great local talent. Then, next Thursday 5
February we've got Bugz in the Attic coming to do a special Open Sesame
session with Kano and I at Honkytonks. Hope you can keep up!
until then
Ennio Styles
