    MAESTRO
    Director: Josell Ramos
    Origin: USA, 2003
    Length: 92 min.
A passionate look back at the multicultural, underground dance movement in New York that coalesced in the early 1970's, MAESTRO is a documentary feature, about how a group of people found refuge and a call for life outside the mainstream. What evolved was a music/dance scene that set the groundwork for what was to come in dance music culture worldwide, a rare insight into the secret world of the underground DJ. MAESTRO takes you into the world of Larry Levan of Paradise Garage and David Mancuso of the Loft as they formed the center of the underground DJ culture and how these spaces became a site for the exploration of racial and gender politics. Cuban American director Josell Ramos directs this documentary much like a DJ, creating a pulsing rhythm to the beat of archive footage, music, and interviews.
