    Jon Freer’s Reviews. 4th March 2004.

Thanks to Tammy at Magnum PR, Nick Holder, Pipes, Chris Duckenfield and Irfan at Rainy City Music for these…

    Fresh 12” action.

Stefan Goldmann – Macroply / Submerge (Classic)
Cat No: CMC19. Release Date: 22nd March 2004.
Wishing to keep the punters guessing, Stefan opts to turn in a sedated Metro Area style groove, alongside the expected House stormer. The laidback “Macroply” is sweeter of the two, courtesy of some clipped percussion, meandering live guitar flexings and spaced-out string sweeps. “Submerge” jolts you out of a relaxing daydream that “Macroply” induced. Wide-eyed keys take on a bad tempered bass alongside Kristiana’s carefree vocals on this floor-bound journey.

Nick Holder – Back In The Day Vol. 2 (DNH)
    Cat No: DNH 127. Promo.
Nick may be getting record spinners hot under the collar with his mid-tempo ode to the dumping of those who show more affection to their vinyl than their loved ones, but “Back In The Day Vol 2” shows he can still cut it at a faster pace. “That Was Then” remembers the good times, over stern yet uplifting keys, a hearty thinking man’s bass and solid percussion. “Not Alone” courts for amorous attention, as a trademark minor key groove and a disconsolate trumpet duet mournfully.

V/A - Dirt Records Sampler One (Dirt Records)
    Cat No: DIRT 000. Promo.
This grubby little 12” is a convincing opener for an imprint based in a city famed for its cutlery and run by a man who knows a thing or two about visual appeal. The Lovers’s “Sex Club” in Pipes & Slippers remixed form sounds like the gallic group have got lost at a soundclash in Kingston, as a digital-ragga bassline and shrieking firework keys muffle their romantically toned vocals. The Dub lets the woozy bassline get inside your consciousness and expand your mind, whilst the ‘Dirt Remake’ of Spoonface’s “Ends” is a nasty-bassed rib-cage shaker. Bleep’s suggestive “Bleep Me” sounding like an undercover outing from Sheffield’s stealing House don, takes alerting keys, body popping percussion and an equally uncouth bassline on a riotous dancefloor ride.

Andy Caldwell Feat. Omega – Pushin’ (Inspirit Music)
Cat No: IML016. Release Date: 15th March 2004.
Continuing in a similar vein to his previous releases for this imprint, Andy once again enlists Omega for a slice of chunky groovacious House, which will fill floors but never set the world on fire. The original sees tidy drumming, half-hearted siren keys and a boogie bass link up under Omega’s unsatisfied vocals. Andy’s ‘Dub Perspective’ lets an analogue bass dominate proceedings, while discoid keys writhe and percussive claps provide the needed propelling action.

The Timeless Love Orchestra – I Feel Love E.P. (Testing The Water)
    Cat No: TTW003. Promo.
Never in a million years did I expect to hear a cover of Donna Summer’s energetic love ode so obviously rooted in spirituality. Dr Boom’s ‘Electro Love Mix’ sees straight hit tabla percussion link up with perfect synth smiles and crazy bass gurgling. The ‘Sufi Love Mix’ is a beguiling assault on the senses, courtesy of wailing bitten by love vocals, tolling key jangling bells and contorted string expressions. The Tellurians version is tailor made for those tougher moments, with its dependable bass, cosmic keys and spirited vox.

The Elastic Band – Sunny (Rainy City Music)
    Cat No: RCM0018. Promo.
The dependable Elastic Band have put their own glowing spin on this gloriously upbeat summertime anthem. The excitement on the ‘City People Soul Heaven Mix’ is palpable, where wonderful violins, guitars enjoying the warmth and ecstatic vocals link up sublimely. The City Peepz ‘Alt. Boogie Mix’ sees broken percussion give the track a refreshingly novel spin, while sweet keys link up with a slick bass and guitars add a weightless feel.
