Hola,
On deck for tonight's show are several choice new entries that I
think you'll enjoy.
Germany's ~scape label celebrates it's 5th anniversary with a fine
compilation of new and exclusive tunes, titled but then again. Many
of the usual suspects (Pole, Jan Jelinek, Thomas Fehlmann) are
present, as are newcomers (at least to me) such as Crackhaus, Triola,
and Headset & Soulo. If glitch-pop has a soul, this would be it.
Grandpa Mojo is a working quartet out of Boulder, CO that plays live
trip-hop and carries it off pretty well, too. Their eight-track debut
is split evenly between live and studio work and it's all extremely
energetic and well-produced. Point your browser to
www.grandpamojo.com for more on these dudes.
Most of you have never sat through 16 remixes of Carl Douglas' "Kung
Fu Fighting," but that's just what I did the other day and lived to
tell you about it. The Echo Beach label has corralled Adrian
Sherwood, Don Letts, Pole, Karl Mostl, Kid Loco and 11 others onto
this curious disc with mixed results. Some versions are just ok, but
others - particularly the ones that veer off into serious electronica
territory are very interesting indeed. Not for everyone, but worth
checking out.
Rough Cuts from Parov Stelar is a groovy, downtempo affair, rife with
atmosphere and some choice beats and transitions easily from living
room to dance floor.....Jazzanova and Rene from Soultrade Records
explore the world of 'nu-folk' with their excellent compilation
Secret Love, that positions rare gems against up-and-coming stars of
tomorrow...Other long players include the latest from Handsome Boy
Modeling School, Minus 8, Robag Wruhme and a superb (and
out-of-print) collection of Nino Rota compositions performed by some
of the best players in the jazz arena, including Muhal Richard
Abrahms, Jaki Byard, Carla Bley, David Amram, Steve Lacy and William
S. Fischer. It's entitled Amacord Nina Rota and all music was
originally composed by Rota for the films of Federico Fellini.
Perry Hemus sent over two choice 12"s from his Woodland label that
I'm excited about. The first is "Changes in 3/4" that's lifted from
his Rhodesmode CD and gets the re-rub from Sasso and Gerd. The other
is an EP from a forthcoming release by trumpeter Bryan Corbett,
featuring "Off The Rails" - a track that's jazzy inna 4-Hero stylee
and practically leaps off the turntable. I jumped up from my desk and
ran over to the Technics to see what I had just put on - I was very
excited.
Last but not least, is an EP called Southern Borders Soul Music
reprezentin' some of the beatmasters living in and around Austin, TX.
The Strange Fruit Project, Nick Nack, Hydroponic Sound System and
others, lay down the hip and the hop, with bonus beats to boot! Nice.
I think I've used up enough of your server's storage space, so I'm
heading off to wrangle and tangle with SBC. See you next week...
Ciao for now,
David
