DOT NUMBER ONE:
(from the Associated Press)
"Broadcast company Radio One Inc. on Monday said it agreed to buy 51 percent of privately held
Reach Media Inc. for about $56.1 million in cash and Radio One stock - adding the hit "Tom
Joyner Morning Show" program to its properties...."
DOT NUMBER TWO
(from Debra Walker)
"Has anyone here heard any cuts from the new Neville Brothers CD? I
just happened to hear their cover of "Ball of Confusion" (from the new
release) tonight on local radio - WXRT, of course. It's a damned
shame that this cut, and the rest of this group's music, will most
likely never be heard on "black" radio, 'cause let me tell y'all: The
Nevilles are tres FUNKY, as they WORK IT on "Ball of Confusion"!..."
---------------------------------------------------
Obviously very few people have heard the new release from the Neville Brothers.
And it's unlikely that anyone beyond those who have already heard it, ever will.
That is the nature of today's knee-gro radio industry. And that's the way it's going to stay
until the consumer demands a different model. As of today not only do the Neville Brothers
have a new release, but there are a dozen or so others from artists like: Clarence Burke Jr,
Eddie Holman, Soul Generation, Manhattans, Persuaders, Vernon Reid, Buddy Miles, Martha
Reeves, Otis Blackwell, Donny Hathaway, Voices of East Harlem, New Birth, Bar-Kay's, Chuck D,
Jimmie Castor, and others that are destined to go largely unheard as well.
As long as the people who are most likely to actually enjoy this music (and probably buy it)
continue to "lock & load" their radio station pre-sets on radio stations that are UNLIKELY TO
EVER PLAY THE MUSIC THAT THEY ACTUALLY WANT TO HEAR (then they won't hear the music).
And that in my opinion is quite sad and it says quite a bit about human nature. Just like
there are many people (a majority apparently) who refuse to vote in their best interests,
there are many people who make their descions on what radio stations to listen to in the same
manner.
Folks, each time you choose to "lock & load" your radio station pre-sets on KNEE-GRO radio
stations, you are in effect CASTING YOUR VOTE AGAINST: Neville Brothers, Clarence Burke Jr,
Eddie Holman, Soul Generation, Manhattans, Persuaders, Vernon Reid, Buddy Miles, Martha
Reeves, Otis Blackwell, Donny Hathaway, Voices of East Harlem, New Birth, Bar-Kay's, Chuck D,
Jimmie Castor, and others.
The answer to this problem is simple:
- STOP LISTENING TO KNEE-GRO RADIO STATIONS
- STOP SUPPORTING THE KNEE-GRO RADIO STATION ADVERTISERS
- SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE MUSIC SOURCES
- BUY MUSIC DIRECTLY FROM ARTIST WEB SITES
In today's world these artists are relatively easy to find. Of course we have a number of them
who are associated with Soul-Patrol. And of course there are some who are not. Either way they
are easy to find. Just type their names into your favorite search engine and you can find
their "official site". At their "official site" they usually provide a way to both hear their
new releases and to buy them.
Ultimatly the answer to this question is 100 percent about the behavior of the consumer. If
the consumer is willing to modify their behavior, then they will be rewarded with GREAT MUSIC.
And if they aren't then the status quo (CRAP MUSIC) provided by "knee-gro radio" will remain
in full effect.
I fully understand that we are all creatures of habit. And that habits are hard to break.
However if we care about the long term future of the music, the solution to the problem is
well within our reach and we don't need anyones help to do so.
