Thanks to Lucy at Elemental Consulting, Nick at NRK, All at Compost, Anton & Chris at Trailer Media and Garo at Rooftop for these…

David Axelrod – The Edge (Capitol Jazz)
    Available Now.
Many of the Hip Hop generation will know Axelrod’s music by way of samples that have been plucked by bboys with an ear for simple stirring melodies, which have worked ever so effectively alongside direct drums and kicking lyrics. This collection, bringing together some of the finest moments from the 1966-70 period Axelrod spent at Capitol, show that his breathtaking work should also be enjoyed in its purest form. Regal brass, a romantic flute and a sonorous bass meet on David McCallum’s “The Edge”. Axelrod’s “A Divine Image” is an enlightened number, with meditative keys and apocalyptic brass. “Human Abstraction” is another personal composition, where gorgeous keys, gut wrenching electric guitars and a tickling bass meet. Enchanting.

The Mizell Brothers – Mizell (Blue Note)
    Available Now.
This commemorative album focuses on Larry and Fonce’s production work at Blue Note between 1972 and 1976. The CD is a goodtime celebration of polished souliness and sweet sticky jazzy flavours. Donald Byrd’s “Changes” tells the truth over grinning brass, sharp whistling and frantic string work. Mizellstory’s “N R Time” sees committed brass work their magic over hitting drums and a sharpened funk bass. Beautiful guitars, assenting brass and patted percussion meet on Donald Byrd’s wondrous “Think Twice”. Wonderfully positive stuff.

V/A – Jazzanova’s Blue Note Trip (Blue Note)
    Available Now.
It doesn’t take a genius to recognise Jazzanova’s main musical driving force. Here, they get the chance to indulge in their love of straight-up jazzy material, sourced from Blue Note’s extensive catalogue. The first disc contains both impossibly smooth compositions and overblown tracks, featuring the likes of Horace Parlan’s complex key addled “Congalegra” and Freddie Hubard’s butterfly flute driven “Blue Spirits”. The second disc looks towards less flamboyant and more melancholic material, where highlights include the throaty brass laced “Merci Bon Dieu” from Charlie Rouse and Eddie Gale’s melodious vocal piece, entitled “Song Of Will”. This is a rather special collection, where the tracks have been expertly fitted together by German experts Jazzanova.

V/A – NRK ReMasters Collection (NRK)
Cat No: NRK CD 022. Available Now.
Originally available as a raft of 12’s that surfaced over the summer, NRK celebrate reaching a century of releases by reissuing those remastered tracks by way of a triple CD set. Featuring many a US and European House name that has graced the imprint over the years, this collection contains some god damn essential bumpin’ and powerful House classics. CD One starts with a bang and features cuts of note like Derrick Carter’s swingy-keyed re-rub of Tera Deva’s “Fresh Start” and Audio Soul Project’s devastating “Moving Paradigm”. CD Two contains Nick Holder’s awesome “Summer Daze”, where a glorious keys and guitar melody is lapped up by wave after wave of percussion. The final disc rounds off the set in fine style, with cuts of note including Onionz & Joeski’s flying keyed “Celia’s Groove” and Joshua’s hypnotic “Watch Da Bass”. A ‘proper’ House compilation.

    V/A – Isar’s Gold (Compost)
Cat No: CPT 201-2. Release Date: TBC.
Now into their third century of releases, Compost give the world a taste of the music currently emanating from their home city of Munich in the shape of “Isar’s Gold”. Pushing numerous musical buttons and encompassing everything from sleazy electrocuted grooves to techy bangers and pained guitar driven numbers, this CD, compiled by party organiser and spinner Benjamin Fröhlich, gives a clear view of music today in this pulsating German city. Poets Of Rhythm’s “Smilin’ (While Your Cryin’)” throws thoughtful guitars and rustic percussion under heartbroken vocals. “4 Men Terror” from Cio D’or sees bright synths shine, as guitars litter the path travelled by serious beats and a grating bassline. The disc ends with Lali Puna’s exquisite “Together In Electric Dreams”, where a vocalist struggles to come to terms with the new emotions she’s experiencing, over candle brightness keys and backwards percussion. Complete with a map of Munich hotspots and artist introductions, “Isar’!
     s
Gold” is a wonderful tourist guide for the musically minded.

V/A – The Original Mellow Soul Selection (Original Selection)
Cat No: OSEL 007. Available Now.
Sweet jazzed out lovelies and amicable relaxed numbers dominate this instalment of the consistent Original Selection series. Romance dominates the subject matter of the vocal numbers, with heartbreaking tearies appearing alongside those flushed by the strength of love. The first disc is the jazzier of the two, and features tracks like the life-affirming “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” from Roy Ayers and the saxed out happiness of Level 42’s “Love Meeting Love”. Omar’s refreshing “There’s Nothing Like This” and the Gap Band’s irresistibly keyed “Outstanding” are a couple of show stoppers from the calmer second CD. Ideal as a relaxation aid or a musical pacifier.

V/A – The Original 80s Groove Selection (Original Selection)
Cat No: OSEL 008. Available Now.
This powerful collection targets the odd electronic groovers, funky assed numbers and even Housefloor faves that have their roots in soul. Focussing on strictly 80s gems, outstanding tracks appear alongside those that haven’t really stood the test of time. It’s difficult not to be touched by the heart-warming sweetness of Salsoul Orchestra’s “Take Some Time Out (For Love)”, whilst incensed string, poppin’ beats and power keys meet on David Joseph’s “You Can’t Hide Your Love”. Silvia Striplin implores on the guitar driven “Give Me Your Love”, whilst snappy beats and a sleek bass back truly fed up vocals on Class Action’s “Weekend”. Great stuff.

V/A – Le Pop 3 (Le Pop Musik)
US Release Date: 12th December 2005.
The third instalment of the Le Pop series is another charming collection, focussing on shapely instrumentation and eloquently executed vocal work. Ranging from delicate acoustic numbers to trip-hop style pieces and more regular poppy efforts, “Le Pop 3” is a delightful addition to the series. Camille’s “Baby Carni Bird” is an odd little number, with a slinky bassline, earnest keys and lovely vocals. Jérôme Minière avec Lhasa gives us the softly spoken and bewitchingly dark “Un Magasin Qui N’Existe Pas”, where dark grey guitars and a solemn bass combine. “Pas Ce Soir” from Thierry Stremler is a relaxed number, with affable guitars, reliable drumming and flowing strings. Intriguing, in a good way!
