Hello all
The Stylin Loves 2005 show is now online with 28 of the (well, my) best tunes of the year:
http://www.quantumlounge.net/h-docs/radio.php?r_id=11
Stylin loved 2005 even though it was probably more a year of consolidation than innovation. Most of the tunes that made the final show for the year were great examples of styles that have been done in years gone by. Probably Jamie Lidell's 'When I Come Back Around" was for me the 'freshest' tune in the list, but even that is kinda retro. For some ill futuristic shit, check out the 'Legends of the Underground' soundtrack on Kindred Spirits.
The cuts from Faith Evans and Fantasia showed that a ripping vocal will triumph over less-than-perfect production, while many of the tunes that missed out show that the reverse is not true. The challenge for 2006 is for the combine great productions with hot vocals. Not always easy, of course.
We've had a number of artists making their return to the 'Stylin Loves ...' series, including Télépopmusik, Quantic, Rasmus Faber (aka Soul Treat) and Ed Motta, who co-wrote and performed my tune of 2003 with Paula Lima ('As Famosas Gargalhadas do Youka').
Detroit delivered more quality music from the likes of Carl Craig, Waajeed's Platinum Pied Pipers, Dwele and John Arnold, but for me the guy to watch is Malik Alston, an artist who has the total package (voice, songwriting, production, keys) across jazz, soul, house and broken beats. Another one to watch is Darryl Reeves who as a saxophonist and band-leader has worked with Jill Scott and cut 2 excellent straight jazz albums, but who has also been dabbling in hip hop production, to great effect on his tough bossa remix of Jay-Z. Soul sisters Sharon Jones and Nicole Willis teamed up with funk brothers the Dap Kings and the Soul Investigators respectively to deliver two great LPs of classic-sounding funk and soul with proper songs. Faith Evans gave us the soul album of the year with 'The First Lady' but then promptly trashed her rep with the god-awful 'A Faithful Christmas'. Hanna's killer 4-track EP on Theo Parrish's label showed that instrumental house music isn't dead yet.
On the reissue compilation front, I was most impressed with Gilles Peterson Digs America, Joey Negro & Sean P's 'The Soul of Disco' and John Kong's 'Ready or Not' which unearthed some incredible Canadian jazz from the 60s and 70s.
I definitely didn't see enough gigs this year, but the highlight for me was Mark de Clive-Lowe and Bembe Segue at Open Sesame, accompanied by a makeshift band including Lance Ferguson (aka Lanu) on guitar and Cameron Undy (aka Kid Zen) on bass (a last-minute surprise visit). Freesoul down under.
Thanks to all that have helped behind the scenes so that I can bring Stylin to you every week, and to everyone who has supported my various other musical activities. It's great to have finally been able to deliver on my long-time promise of having an online on-demand version of Stylin, and that one has only been possible thanks to Nic and Justin from quantumlounge.net. Also thanks to everyone who's been patient with me on email ;)
I'm taking a couple of weeks off the show, but if you tune in to the live show on RRR-FM you'll catch PJR and Dave Sinclair filling in for me, two old school soulboys that are equally fanatical about the newer sounds of house, hip hop, drum & bass, etc.
Catch you in 2006.
until then
Ennio Styles
