ART INSTALLATION DETAILS ....
a) La Casita
Tucked away in corner neighborhood gardens of East Harlem, and
originating in Puerto Rico, the Casita ("little house") is a place where
the community gathers, playing live music, meeting friends, family, and
preparing an afternoon barbeque. It is a vernacular structure that dates
back to the rich days of Puerto Rico's farming economy. This
installation, recently constructed for a show at the Museo de Arte de
Puerto Rico, is now travelling to NYC for Tropic of Cancer. Created by
Doze Green, David Ellis, Chris Mendoza, Jose Parla, and Rostarr
b) Sun Stone Interpretations
Drawing inspiration from the Aztec and Maya calendars, the participating
artists will create a series of sun dials displaying their vision and
interpretation of telling time and ritual, as it was told before the
modern solar calendar. These circular pieces stimulate the senses and
evoke contemplation and dialog of one's own being in time and destiny.
The artists possess a rich vocabulary in iconography, expressed through
versatile mediums of painting, graphic design, murals, and sculpture.
With a highly evolved style and unique language of symbols that blend
the natural and mystical folklore, they recontextualize myth and ancestry.
