Hola,
Returned home a little while ago from a screening of "War Of The
Worlds" and I have to say it's not bad for a summer popcorn flick. If
you're a little fed up with Tom Cruise's recent antics, you might
have a difficult time buying him in the role of a deadbeat dad turned
hero, but remember: it's all about the aliens. The CGI work was
impressive and the massive tripods that are bent on exterminating
life on earth are pretty cold and heartless. It gets more corny
towards the end, but it's Spielberg, so that's to be expected, I
suppose. All in all, a pretty decent film if you're going for aliens
and massive special effects. If it's dialog you're after, this isn't
it.
Tonight I'm filling in for Harry Duncan from 8-10pm, with two hours
of jazz, blues and soul on In The Soul Kitchen, followed by our usual
dose of beats, rhythm & sound on FreeFall from 10pm-midnight. On deck
this evening is the jazz violin duo, Common Ground, Kahil El'Zabar
recorded live in Chicago, classic Jimmy Scott, Stan Kenton and Johnny
Smith, brand new singles from Hird, the Five Corners Quintet and
Blakai, along with full-length discs from Pink Freud, Domu and Kosma.
Oh yeah - and all the new stuff I forgot to bring in last week......
If you're a local, tune it for tickets to see Brazilian Girls at the
Fillmore, this week's Dub Mission featuring Warsaw Poland Bros. vs
Stucky and more copies of Motown Remixed.
Hope you'll join me!
Ciao for now,
David
