FLOW05 – NUSPIRIT HELSINKI FESTIVAL WILL ONCE AGAIN BRING THE CURRENT
CREAM OF URBAN RHYTHM MUSIC TO HELSINKI

The Nuspirit Helsinki Collective will organise the Flow05 festival at
the ‘Makasiinit’ warehouses on 19 - 20 August. The great success of
last year’s inaugural festival means that this year’s will expand to
take over the entire Makasiinit area. Flow05 will be organised in
    collaboration with the Helsinki Festival.

Flow 05’s versatile programme ranges from acoustic jazz to soul
classics, and from Afro-American folk to soulful electronic dance
music. This year’s programme will also include new circus (Ville Walo
and Harri Hakkarainen) and jazz dance (JazzCotech Dancers) and –
already familiar from last year - a free daytime event with no age
limit featuring music, film, a record fair and an array of ethnic food.

Topping the bill on Friday night is the modern British soul icon Omar,
a big favourite and inspiring example to many modern soul stars. Omar’s
breakthrough came in the early 1990s when There’s nothing like this
became a hit. His roots are Jamaican and Indian and his singing style
is very recognisable. Omar’s forthcoming album features guest
appearances by Common, with whom he will undertake a US tour next
autumn, and Stevie Wonder, who has also composed music for the album.
Erykah Badu and Angie Stone appeared on his last album Best By Far.

The Philadelphian producer/DJ and musical chameleon King Britt will
perform his tribute project to the Afro-American folk artist Sister
Gertrude Morgan. Morgan (1900-1980) was not only a visual artist but
also a singer whose idiosyncratic songs have been arranged by King
Britt for a five-man band. Visuals based on Morgan’s art have also
been incorporated into the show. Also on friday there will be a special
live show by the Finnish group Husky Rescue who have recently released
a highly acclaimed debut album on Catskills Records.

Saturday night’s headlining artist is Gwen McCrae, a strong-voiced
American soul diva whose career has spanned four decades. Her big hit
Rockin’ Chair (1975) was nominated for a Grammy and sold millions of
copies, making McCrae an international star. She is also known for her
timeless dance classics 90% Of Me Is You, All This Love That I'm
    Givin', and Funky Sensation.

Saturday’s other performers include the British rock and jazz organist
Brian Auger, whose career also began several decades ago, and the
Helsinki-based The Five Corners Quintet, who will appear with the 1960s
hipster jazz icon and six-time Grammy-nominated American jazz-singer
legend Mark Murphy, who will also guest on the group’s first
full-length album, which will be released internationally this year.

Flow’s DJ guests are from the other side of the Atlantic this year.
Besides being one half of the legendary New York-based Masters at Work
production duo, Kenny “Dope” Gonzales is also known as a versatile DJ
and a passionate record collector. Apart from MAW’s prolific output,
Kenny Dope has made his name as a remixer and solo artist; his The Bomb
(These Sounds Fall into My Mind), which was released under the name
Bucketheads, was one of the best known club hits of the 1990s.

DJ Spinna is a New York DJ/producer whose hiphop-rooted musical vision
has been used by numerous urban outfits and also a range of pop artists
including Michael Jackson and George Michael. Osunlade, who has settled
in Puerto Rico, is currently working with new material by Lauryn Hill.
He has come to attention through his spiritual house music and also as
a colourful character who is formally qualified not only as a musician
but also as a priest of the African Ifa religion.

Both Flow nights sold out in 2004 and the festival was awarded e.g. the
Association for Live Music’s Elmu Award and voted the best event of the
    year in many audience polls.

Advance tickets for the evening events (over-18 age limit) can be
    bought from Lippupiste.
