WITNESS MALANDELA ZULU’S REBIRTH OF SOUL AT DC SANCTUARY

WASHINGTON, DC – On November 17, 2005, from 6pm to 9pm, Zulu Soul and Clarity Media Studios present the opening of “Soul Rebirth”, a multimedia exhibition of works by visual artist/sculptor Malandela Zulu.

A Washington, DC native, Malandela Zulu specializes in African-influenced art, his mediums of preference being printmaking, drawing, painting, photography, ceramics and drumming. He draws inspiration from a spiritual well-spring that he feels many people ignore or cannot see. “Art is spirit made flesh”, he believes, each of his pieces speaking to someone’s spirit.

Ever since he was a child, Zulu has been interested in all forms of art, beginning with drumming at the age of 4, then later on to drawing. After a year spent studying graphic design at The Art Institute of Atlanta, he returned to DC, enrolled at Howard University and changed his major to printmaking. He won an honorable mention in Howard University’s Senior Graduation Show at the Howard University Gallery and graduated in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. Travels to Ghana, parts of East Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean influenced his personal vision and perspective as well as the manner in which he embraces, expresses and interprets African art. His primary artistic influences include Mama Sala Damali, Kofi Tyus, Professor Pointer and Howard University professor Gibson Hunter.

For the last 4 years, Zulu has taught Art to high school students. He is committed to using his special gifts and talents to teach the youth different art forms and help them to express and heal themselves. Two of his paintings grace the covers of two published books, “Akan Protocol: Remembering the Traditions of Our Ancestors” and “The Quest For Spiritual Transformation: An Introduction to Traditional Akan Religion, Rituals and Practices,” both by Nana Ohemma Akua Kyerewaa Opokuwaa, Chief Priest of Asomdwee Fie, Shrine of the Abosom and Nsamanfo, Inc. (AFSANI). Previously, he has held a number of successful art shows, both in and outside the DC Area. Previous venues include Rock Creek Park, Cada Vez, Ozio’s and Artomatic 2004. At the IBBNEC Show, he won First Place for Best Booth.

“Soul Rebirth” will be shown at the DC Sanctuary Gallery and Performance Space, located at 1355 H St. NE., Washington, DC. On November 17, from 6pm to 9pm, there will be an opening reception which will include a discussion and guided tour of the exhibit by the artist. Jabari Exum, 1/2 of DC hip-hop group Hueman Prophets and a member of Farafina Kan West African Percussion Orchestra, will be giving a djembe drum performance. Refreshments will be served. On November 19, Zulu will be on hand to meet visitors and discuss the exhibit from 2pm to 6pm. The exhibit will run until December 17, 2005, hours by appointment only.
