Jon Freer’s Club Reviews: El Diablos Social Club with Sean P. Saturday 19th November at an undisclosed location, Manchester.
Booze soaked evenings in Northern Quarter drinkeries serve as the public face of the Diablos nocturnal jaunts, but their true devilish nature is exposed when these fiends decamp to a cosy crypt-like basement for sporadic episodes of post midnight sorcery. Centrally located yet somehow detached from the rest of humanity, these infrequent word-of-mouth gatherings that have an electric atmosphere and Housey-Discoid musical tendencies, are now etched firmly into Manchester clubbing folklore. The bitter coldness of the weather on this late November eve meant that descending down those steep stairs towards a comfortably warm basement provided a respite from the wind’s icy battering. With the walls decked in red fabric, an adequate soundsystem in place and the lights turned right down, the subterranean cavern was sufficiently transformed for an instalment of musical witchcraft.
Early doors saw Neil Diablo and Danny Webb, mainstays of these nocturnal gatherings take turns behind the impish turntables. They treated the genial crowd to slouching discoid tackle and sleazy House numbers, which included Chicken Lips’ mesmeric Dub of “No Wow” by The Kills. A hotly anticipated guest, Disco expert Sean P followed, and he thrilled the assembled audience, with a sparkling selection of disco-reeking records. The crowd responded vociferously to Sean’s choices, as he spun a host of tunes recognisable as sample sources alongside party favourites like Goody Good’s joyful “It Looks Like Love”. This was another inimitable Diablos gathering, which was made that extra bit special by Sean P’s dazzling appearance.
