Howdy,
Got a great evening lined up that includes tickets to see the World
Saxophone Quartet at the Great American on Thursday, The Go Team
appearing at the Fillmore on Sunday (I'll be playing music up in the
Lounge...come and say hey) and passes to see the critically acclaimed
film, "The Squid & The Whale," starring Jeff Daniels and Laura
Linney, beginning next Monday at the Bridge.
Musically, we're going to sample the new Stevie Wonder disc, as well
as additional digital delicacies from Gerardo Frisina, Dwele, Sofa
Surfers, London Elektricity, soul seductress Carleen Anderson, RSL's
debut release and some interesting compilations such as The In-Kraut
- a collection of German grooves recorded between 1966-1974, Planet
Delsin - an audio birthday party thrown by the Dutch label to
celebrate their 50th release and the new Impulsive! album that has an
interesting array of producers re-working the Impulse catalog.
Telefon Tel-Aviv's re-thinking of "Stolen Moments" by Oliver Nelson
is haunting, George Russell's "A Helluva Town" is positively poppin'
after Sa-Ra get a hold of him and Boozoo Bajou add some dubby
goodness to Pharoah Sanders' "Astral Traveling." Overall, I give this
disc bonus points for not taking the easy way out and hous-ing up the
more obvious 'hits.' The song selections are quirky (in the best
possible way) and so are many of the producers, making for a good
match.
Last week's In The Soul Kitchen set is up on the second Live365
stream...lots of great jazz and other treats.....check out the
playlist and link below. Have a great week....until next time.....
Ciao for now,
David
