So What! est. 1992, is the West Coast's longest running Acid Jazz club night. Produced by Step On Productions (DJ K-Nee and DJ Style N. Fashion) So What! comprises record release parties for most major acid jazz parties, it is recognised and supported by Giant Step in NY, Mushroom Jazz in SF, and On The One Magazine. At nearly five years old, So What! is not only a trailblazing club (we debuted the idea of live Acid Jazz in Colorado with the 3 Hip Horns (featuring current memebers of Quintetto X, as well as exposing most of Boulder's Sol Jaz Massive to their first taste of Acid Jazz, poetry and performance art, as well as guest spots from the likes of: DJ Greyboy, Digable Planets' Doodlebug, the LA Clippers Brian Williams, Goldie, Mark Farina, CK Smart, Amber Sunshower, Spearhead, and saxophonist Geoff Gallegos. City Spirit Alumnus have also gone on to greatness, DJ Cassien one of the founders of So What! blew up NYC as a part of the original Koncrete Jungle line-up, and is currently re-mixing and producing new directions in sound in NYC. He cut his teeth at So What! and plays guest spots when he returns to Denver. Same as DJ Swingsett, who is featured on the Ubiquity "What's Cookin'" compilation, with his song "Peace on the Streets." David has worked with DJ Smash, and Peter Daou behind the boards, as well as recurring as a DJ for the Giant Step crew in NYC. Swingsett makes a special trip back to So What! about every six months or so, just to keep it real. Another So What! alumn to move on to greatness is Jeremy Freeman, the President of Smashing Pumpkins label Scratchie Records. Jeremy interjected his blend of Dancehall sounds and Dub experiments (before the "Trip Hop" explosion) into the mix and definitely credits his time at City Spirit as one of the driving forces behind his "Golden Ears" at Scratchie. As for myself (DJ Style N. Fashion aka Shawn White) I have recently begun publishing a Paper Magazine-esque free monthly called Freestyle, which is helping to tie up a lot of Denver's cultural loose ends. Acid Jazz releases get a lot of pub in Freestyle, along with the fronts of Style, Fashion and the entire scene here in Denver. DJ K-Nee has been selling tapes here and in NY and SF, he has been invited to Giant Step, and plays Mushroom Jazz and the Up & Down club whenever he visits SF. Clearly, you must agree that the Step On Sound not only keeps it real, we keep it RIGHT!
