The Week in Acid Jazz [Seattle]

Ok here I am, spoutin' nonsense like "there are really only two places to catch AJ shows in Seattle," when suddenly I realize that I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. So I decide to do a bit of checkin' into the matter, and I find that not only are there more than two clubs that spin acid jazz, you can get your RDA of AJ every night of the week!
Monday
Visit the Red Rose, a new "supper club" at Pier 57 (1301 Alaskan Way). Dine and dance the night away (but please remember to wait an hour after eating before performing strenuous physical activity). Note, this place has its grand opening tonight (Nov 3)! DJ Nasir and a guest DJ from NY will be playin' tunes, although not necessarily acid jazz. Monday nights will be live acid jazz performances. Alternatively, you can head to the Big Time Brewery, at 4133 University Way (in the U District) and catch their Jazz Monday, which is a preview of 6 jazz discs throughout the night. The 6 discs for each night are on sale for the following week down the street at Cellophane Square.

Tuesday
You've again got two choices tonight! You can catch DJs Don & Chris at Temple Billiards (126 South Jackson, Seattle) as they spin a medley of acid jazz, hip-hop, funk, and blues. Plus they've got a large number of tables on which you can hone your stick skills. Or, head over to The Easy at 916 East Pike, for Bitches' Brew. There's no cover! To warn the tolerance-impaired, The Easy is a fem/dyke bar most nights. Now you might understand where they got the name for tonight's festivities.

Wednesday
Pangaea, live acid jazz at 14 Roy, the Blob on Queen Anne. Coincidentally enough, you'll find it on 14 Roy St in Queen Anne. Yes, the strangest building in Seattle (it looks like a concrete Jabba the Hut) has recently come alive as a dance club. I can vouch for Friday nights being pretty hep, but I've yet to make it there on a Wednesday. But don't feel forced into checking it out, because you could instead be hanging out at El Lobo Loco in Pioneer Square (309 1st Ave South). This is the newest club in Pioneer Square. DJ Mike Z will spin AJ all night long. Better yet, there's no cover!

(sea) Strong - Crocodile Cafe, 206.918.4988 (21+)
        DJs: Brian Lyons, Donald Glaude
often jungle in the small room

Thursday
Pangaea, live acid jazz at Casa U Betcha in Belltown (2212 1st Avenue). Evidently these guys just head all over town, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them popping up at new clubs as time goes by. I'll let you know. But in the meantime you can catch them at Casa and pick up cheap microbrews. The night begins at 10pm, I'm guessing you can get in free before that, or with cover afterwards.

(sea) Desire - Victor's, Western & Maroin (21+)
        DJs: various NW DJs
        9pm-2am, deep house, sometime jungle

Friday
As already reported, you should head over to 1114 Howell St in Seattle and git yerself to the Re-bar. Acid jazz and hiphop all night long, you'll be taken care of by DJ Riz and DJ Eugene. DJ Riz is one of Seattle's finest so make sure to visit!
Flowers (about 43rd on UWay) DJ Josh spins a pretty mellow set, and you're likely to find me there 2 outta 3 times...

Saturday
No choice exists. You are required by law to head to the Weathered Wall for Lemon Twist night, where you can catch the funky sounds of acid jazz upstairs or descend into the "deep house groove" sounds of the downstairs floor. I may have mentioned this before, but I'll do it again: this is the best club in town!

Brasilia - 212 Alaskan Way S, (206)621-7903 (21+). Two rooms,
really catchy dancin music in the ballroom, and some great AJ/chillin
music in the lounge. Great vibe! (my notes)

Sunday
Medicine - ReBar, 1114 Howell, 206.918.4988 (21+)
DJs: Jan 28th Masa (1200 Records), Brian Lyons (Strong)
$4, "pure house"

Soul - Seattle Downunder - may be discontinued UNVERIFIED
DJs: Matt Mau, Captain KY & guests
10pm-4am, House

Well that's it. Step 8: Repeat at step 1. You may now lead a busy but fulfilled life trying to hit one of these clubs every night. By the way, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights as listed are the definitive Seattle acid-jazz scene - accept no alternatives! We've yet to see who conquers Monday thru Thursday...
