Okay, so this thread has continued past the point of being played out, or
mundane, but i had to add my .02 because i unashamedly love this band
more than anyone I know, and i havn't posted in a while. I can recall
listening to them when i was very young. I never really thought of them
as jazz, because it was just too slick. Too much pop sensibility.
These guys created some of the greatest music of the last few decades,
yet underneath it all something was really disturbing about it. there is
some really depressing shit hiding underneath that candy-coated jazz
and those complex arrangements. After i figured them out (well as much as
anyone could figure out steely dan) I realized that their music is kind
of uncomfortable to listen to, because of the conflict between the
beauty and the pain. I think their music exists in an unstable state,
like it could make you want to quit living, or get a huge migrane, or
smile and love it, oblivious to all of the negativity.
I guess my point was that Corduroy, even though i like them alot, have
never produced such intense feelings in me on any level. I really see no
comparison, other than that many people compare them with each other
recently, and not just on the list. I just can't take Corduroy that
seriously. Maybe on their next album i could. i'm still waiting.
