SPAMM (was RE: cool clubs in...)

OK folx,
Here is my unsolicited 2 cents...

This list is very cool, as it is the only way to get
up-to-the-microsecond (electrons travel fast :) information on the
ever-mutating world of acid-jazz. However this list also has a big
problem too... Succintly put, it creates a lot of
SPAMMMM
in one's mailbox. I just returned from a 5 day trip to find 60+ messages
in my mailbox talking about upcoming clubs, shows etc in places more than
1000 mi. away from where I live. This is exactly what I DONT want because
buried in that mound of crap is probably one or two important non-AJ
related messages that I want to read. However to read these messages I
have to read every one of those totally useless (to me) posts on local
goings-on. I hope you non-americans can understand how annoying this
really is. It is far far worse than having to wait in line at the
supermarket for more than 30 seconds... :)
Now before anyone gets their dander up, let me state that I am saying
cut this shit out, because I fully plan on using myself if I ever can get
away from my work to travel a little bit, but rather I wish to state that
there is a solution to cut the spamm, which I will get to in a second...
Also I should state that if we dont cut the spamm out, we are hurting
ourselves, since we have limited the diversity of people on this list by
scaring away the possible musical-fanatic-yet-highly-allergic-to-spamm.
Succintly put, diversity is what acid-jazz is all about, so we want this
list to have as many people on it as possible. AJ is not just about going
to AJ clubs, which the trait in subscribers that the curent format of
this list is currently selecting.

My SOLUTION:

--> Prefix all acid-jazz@ucsd messages with a small, visible and
informative header <--

for example...

"AJ-REV: Greyboy Allstars rule the universe"
would let Joe Schmoe know that this message was a review of some acid
jazz band without having to read the message first.

or

"AJ-LOCAL: What's up in New York on the 15th?"
would let those living in exile in Australia that they should just delete
this message right away.

--> In particular, the Aj-LOCAL prefix should also state what the area in
question is in the rest of the title. <--

And for the sake of continuity, any other AJ subject ought to include
the prefix "AJ:"

I think this is a vital idea to the health of this newsgroup.
It is ever so slightly depressing to see al of the unsubscribe messages
posted erroneously to the list. We shold take it upon ourselves to do
something about it. I think my idea would go a long way to solving this
problem. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I propose that we discuss this for a week or so and agree upon some kind
of hopefully not too complicated standard, and then make it very clear to
all memebrs of the list what the simple rules for posting are...

And before anyone cries about having to follow rules, ask yourself what
is more important... either saving the trouble of typing 5 extra
characters in your email title, or preserving the diversity of this list.

The more people that get the word about acid-jazz, the better of we all
will be...
