Hard to imagine, being from San Francisco, going to see AS at a 35 and over
show! Nothing wrong with that but here it's mostly under 35 shows. Went to
the 11th Street Block Party happening on Sunday, part of the San Francisco
Jazz Festival. It was awesome. Saw Grassy Knoll's second live show at the
Paradise Lounge. Pretty heavy
Axiom/Laswell/Material/Consolodated/Sherwood/Dub insanity style jazz here
but their sax player is out of control. Plays soprano and tenor through
some effects backed by Bob Green on bass, an alto sax played by their
keyboardist/programmer, and very competent drums and guitar (looked like an
8-string). Broun Fellinis came up next.
We had One Nation Underground for a while after that down the street at
Eleven. Volante!
But later that afternoon, the shit: Jimmy Smith and DAMN! -- Mark
Whitfield, Nicholas Payton and Christian McBride! Man those keys are nice,
and Jimmy was grunting and moaning and grunting while these gentlemen
ripped it up. The local clubs drained out to fill the street and see this,
it was nice.
On Saturday night before that a friend of mine's band, JUNK, played.
They're a jazz-funk quartet that pulls alot from the late 60s funk thing
that you can catch on the Blue Note disc Lost Grooves (Lou Donaldson,
Lonnie Smith, Grant Green, etc.). They are very improvisatinal and very
original. In your part of the world they'll be playing at The Art Bar 10-27
and 11-10, at Spice 10-29 and 11-12, and at Paragon 11-14. You should not
miss them!
Greyboy Allstars'll be at Bimbo's here in the city on 10-24. My baby and I
got the tix! Indeed a show to take very seriously.

> Hey folks
> Acid-jazz is slightly alive up here in seattle. Sunday night Alphabet
>Soup played as part of our Earshot Jazz festival, and the crowd was
>distinctly unimpressed. I thought AS really had their shit together, but
>unfortunately most of the audience were 35+yrs and probably not really
>ready for the AS style of rapping. Nobody danced and there was no energy
>exchange between the band and the audience. The band was great, and I had
>good time despite paying a hefty cover. And the irony of the evening
>still has me chuckling.
> But I want to ask, what is up with live acid-jazz in seattle??
>I know alot of people who say they love AJ but never go to the shows, and I
>remember when the Greyboy Allstars came up last aug, most of the audience
>were frat-types who had been given free passes from Ride snowboards.
> Seattle is very big on jazz and has a lot of young people who love good
>music, and I would thiink that more folks would go to shows like these.
