I hear the same sort of comments from friends who attended the recent
Massive attack tour as well. I think it depends on your expectations of
the show. Knowing the vibe of these acts (as well as that of Portishead
to round out the recent Bristol tours) and the fact that they are more
studio heads than classic live 'entertainers' I wasn't dissapointed with
any of these acts when they recently passed through. This stuff IS chill
out music. Promoters could do more to inform people of the formats of the
shows but those who are into the music show at least have a pretty good
idea of the probability of a chill out. I was prepared to accept the
shows in this context.
When I saw Tricky during his first visit to Toronto this tour he was the
supporting act for PJ Harvey. I thought it went well even though he looked
somewhat uncomfortable. I was checking out the audience ( who were there to
see PJ Harvey) to see their reactions to Tricky. When he set it off with
Black Steel they sure as hell woke up and were totally blown away.
My 2 cents :)
