true. don't shell out $400 for a 1200 if you don't plan on doing any mixing,
unless you foresee the possibility you might be doing that later on. Well,
actually if you are planning to spend around $400 on a turntable then it's
probably your best bet, since it will last forever (1200s are built like
german cars). However you can get some pretty 1200-like Gemini or Lineatech
for around $200. they are worthless for mixing but they are good to just
play records, and in that case go with a belt-driven model (less noise than
direct drive). And remember your records will only sound as good as your
weakest audio component, so do not hesitate spending a coupla bucks on a
good cartridge/stylii. Acceptable models would be a Stanton 500AL, which is
a dj cartridge so will last long, won't wear your records to much (don't put
to much weight on it), and has acceptable sound quality, for about $30.
There are comparable Sure models. For better sound get a Stanton 680EL
($70), or Trackmaster ($100) or Ortofons ($100). But you should be fine with
500ALs. And if it's not a 1200, I wouldn't buy a used turntable! Get a
catalog from pro-sound and stage lighting at 1-800-945-9300 for a good
selection and ok prices (not the cheapest though).
ObAJ: if you buy a turntable, play some acid-jazz on it. :)
and thank you for promoting vinyl!
