Hey Mark! Lewis Taylor's CD will be released in Sweden this or next week
but because I work as a freelance journalist I was given an advance
tape which I'm listening to today. Yes, the guy is obviosuly *heavily*
influenced vocally by Marvin, but as you wrote, Lewis is not some
kind of rip-off artist. I think it's very hard to define Lewis' music.
It's soul, a little bit of rock and a good dose of "psychedelica"
as well. It's the type of album that one needs to listen to several
times, it isn't easily listening..:) I don't think it's out in the U.S. yet,
Island's plan is most likely to release it in Europe before taking it to the
States.

Yes! With the advance CD came a bio with a lot of information about Lewis.
Such as that he hates remixes and therefore there will never be any
remixes on his singles. Instead, he'll offer new, non-album cuts which
have been specificly recorded for the single!

Maybe I can fill you in there, thanks to the bio. Lewis was born
and raised in "glorious" Barnet. (Perhaps you can tell why it
says "glorious" Barnet?). He started out playing the piano at the age
of four. When he was eight he was in a car accident which left him
hospitalized for six weeks. His mum and dad bought him a guitar to
play with, and after that he got hooked on music and picked up
instrument after instrument. When Lewis was fourteen years old
he began using drugs and it was not until two years ago that he realized
it was destroying his life. It was during this period that he
played with the Edgar Broughton band (and a couple of other groups too).
Lewis has always loved R & B, but it was not until he
eventually quit the whole music scene, took time off and stopped inhaling
that he concentrated on it. He felt that before attempting to do anything,
he should study the subject properly.
So, for about 18 months he "resarched, via records and the written word, the
history of black music, beginning back in the twenties.." The result
is his album.
/Maria
