1) Thanks to Ross for keeping the vibe alive:
"This discussion reminds me of a discussion around this very issue around 4
years ago when Greg Beuthin (the person who established this list) argued
for a catholic (broad) view of what music is discussed on the list. (My
words not his)."
(God, was it 4 years ago?) Uh, well, I don't think I said *Catholic* but
that's the idea. :-) And I'm glad to see, after four years, despite
disagreements about jungle et al, that this isn't one huge flame war
(maybe some little ones).
I remember one of our discussions when we moved this list from Hawaii to
the UCSD server was what to call it- even back then we realized
"acid-jazz" 1) didn't *really* define anything, 2) there was *other*
music which wasn't quite in the realm but could be included. Amazing how
that discussion has never really left us. I'm just glad we've handled it
so well. So give yourselves a pat on the back. And for those of you don't
want to slog through a ton of posts, there's always
the web site (although that's not always an option). Best thing:
Patience. :-)
Er- speaking of jungle..... There was also some interesting insight into
the direction of "what's popular among the jazzmopolitan crowd" at the On
the One Xmas party (see next message).
2) Following my own advice from the intro letter, and to make this less
than a complete loss, OBA-Jazz: I want to include a plug for
Red Hot and Rio (discussed pnly briefly here before). Worth it a) to
hear Tracey Thorne sing in Portuguese, b) the Chico Science vs. DJ Soul
Slinger remix, c) hear Omar sing Agua de Beber as "Agwa Gee Baby.." ;-) d)
the liners notes: "...although the language of love now includes latex,
it will never end." And of course, it's a fund raiser for AIDS.
P.S. I haven't seen any review of the OM Records release of Mushroom
Jazz. Maybe ck smart or someone who's got it can give us a feel for what
it's like. Independant record companies always deserve a break. :-)

& Struggle
