Sting of the Star Spider
by Science Fixion
In a phrase, this is a musical carnival, packed plenty with solid
technique, variety and pretty entertaining as well.
This is tongue in cheek fusion of rock and jazz. If you were to combine
Zappa, Gino Vanelli and the Arkestra, this is what you may come up with.
It's a record for those who actually listen to music carefully; and you
will want to. There are so many styles and musical elements to listen to
in this record, you will not be able to listen casually. There is no
groovy, funky pop on this album of songs, only compositions carefully laid
out. These dudes can really play within their many mediums so you will,
if you ever get the chance to, want to listen several times and enjoy the
jams.
The downside of the record for me are on the vocal tunes, but that's mostly
because I don't really love this style of vocals. Naturally, as an R &B
singer, I'm pretty picky about vocal styles, but that mentioned, they wont'
your ear the same. They are raspy at best and don't really leave you with
much but the humor and odd-nature of the lyrical content. And the content
is of the cosmos humerous, light-hearted and ultimately happy. However,
most of the album is instrumental, so they really didn't cramp my pleasures
of listening to the album as a whole.
If given the opportunity, I'd enjoy seeing them perform a show. I hope you
can get that together, Shamms, so that might happen....There doesn't appear
to be a weak link in the line-up so a live gig would invite me to hear some
soulful, melodically interesting soloing with their tasty grooves. And
that is what I hope for when going out to a rock fusion gig.

BTW, anyone interested in listening to the disk could swindle me out of it
for something Brazilian. The disk is really a keeper, though I offered so
that the Science Fixion message can be spread throughout the universe.
Any interested party can email direct.
