The sad thing about all of this is that the U.S. is a *huge* cultural
influence, but the music has to be repackaged by the British and sent back to
the U.S. before we will accept it. We have seen this with the blues being
intro'd to many Americans via the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, etc.; also,
detriot acid house had to come to us via the UK rave scene and the various
groups that came with it; and now many Americans are discovering jazz and funk
via the Brand New Heavies et al. I know many people loved these various types
of music before they were brought here by the Brits, but the general population
needs underground music to be played by cute fashionable Brits. I think hip
hop must be one of the first forms of black music that did not have to travel
to the UK before it took hold here.
Sorry this is a rambling post, but just a few thoughts.
