sumthin' ol': Ronnie Laws--Pressure Sensitive (Blue Note 1975).
Rainy days and thrift stores always seem to birth great record finds.
Kudos to Goodwill. I'm sure Ronnie popped up somewhere on the recent
roots o'a-j conversation, but maybe not. Regardless, this is
jazz-funk flowing thick from one of the fountain heads, and the only
vocal track on the album (i'm a funk-vocal fiend) performed by Side
Effect (who?) melts the floor. The album is produced by Crusader
Wayne Henderson (for those trivia freaks out there), and the
combination does the trick. I haven't heard any of his other discs:
please email me if you know one I should also check out.

sumthin'nu: Up Bustle and Out--The Dance of Caravan Summer (Ninja
Tune). I haven't heard much UB&O, only a little on compilations, but
i don't remember them being as tasty as these warm, buttery
latin-inspired down-tempo jazz biscuits. Senor Byrne warms things up -
a la guitarra - and the rest of the album cooks. Much of the
acid-jazz/latin-jazz thing that is picking up fast now reminds me of
much of the work done by U.F.O. I love U.F.O., but am glad this
exciting latin-jazz thing is beginning to diversify in exciting ways
such as in this ep. BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT. Or at least give it a
listen.
