If you are passing by Los Angeles, check out my Acid Jazz happenings page
at http://www.westworld.com/~elson/music/lajazz.html
I update it every Thursday/Friday (depending on when I pick up the weekly
rags and scan the club listings).
There's actually a LOT going on acidjazz-wise in the City of Angels, the
only problem being that the scene is not very organized (as compared to
SF, of course, but then who else is?). We have a healthy cadre of live
acts, who, despite the "laid back" image of L.A., are actually of the
in-your-face, funky (and some of which have LOTS of Latin flavor)
get-up-and-dance variety: Mesh of Mind, Ozomatli, Indigenous Colors,
Butterflow, PMJQ and some group called Jibe (huh? :))
And despite their popularity, the Solsonics is actually not very typical
of LA acid jazz bands!
And though the youth dance culture here in town is oriented towards
techno (and its variants) and standard commercial hip-hop, there are a lot
of clubs with DJs who spin grooves of the jazzy variety, only not many of them like to
describe their sounds with the keywords we're most familiar with...
