Things are really starting to happen up here in Canada as far as
artists and parties that are right on top of whats goin' on in
emerging musical styles.

This past Saturday night we had one of our Bump N' Hustle events here in
Toronto where we premiered the first release from Heavy Handed on Wha?naut
Records (Paul E. and the B N'H crew had em' spinning on their heads,
flashlights and breakdancing in '96 - yes!).

The minds behind this project are Paul E. Lopes (Jazz Vibes
editor for Streetsound, contributer to On The One, SNC, and numerous other
publications) who's radio show Vibes N' Stuff has been *the* radio source
for open minded beat junkies and Jason Palma long time club and radio DJ,
and the buyer at Play De Record the Toronto's No. 1 vinyl specialty store.

The cuts on this clear vinyl 10" are 'Raw Airs' which mashes up a hard hop
hop beat, rhythm sticks, Arabian flute licks compliments of Isax (Bass is
Base) and scratching to nice effect.

The other track is a wicked drum n' bass number called 'Do Yourself Some
Good' with a mix of driving beats and chilled out ambient breakdowns that
would let ya drop some part of the tune into just about any d n' b mix a
dj could think of - lovely! You'd do yourself some good to check into this
one.

A Ninjatune rep from the new North American headquarters in Montreal
dropped by the party and mentioned a possible regular Ninja night here
soon. Friends of fellow listee Chris Ireland have started a regular
Saturday night here for d n' b and otherwise abstract dancefloor bizniss.
Hopefully soon various folks between artists and promoters will have a
sustained buzz going on here on that tip to match the great job Luke (Mo'
Funk) and company have been doing out in Vancouver (congrats on 'The
Stash' Luke).

Montreal band Bullfrog were here last Thursday to kick it live. Their CD
is available domestically here in Canada for now. They have a cut on Fresh
Jazz Vibes Vol II on Mo' Funk. The band features the amazing turntable
skills of DJ Kid Koala who regularly blows audiences away mixed into a
funky/jazzy band that don't quit.
