For those of you on the CD reissue racket, Prestige has FINALLY (they'd
promised this for a while) put out the first series of their answer to Blue
Note's Rare Groove series. The first series includes: Boogaloo Joe Jones,
Idris Muhammad, Rusty Bryant, and Sonny Stitt. The Idris one is the same
double album that BGP put out (Express Yourself/Black Rhythm Experience? I
think that was the album names). The others are also two album couplings that,
in typical Prestige and BGP fashion, look like they are incomplete albums (each
CD suspiciously has 12-13 tracks on it) and tracks that were released on
previous compilations. Regardless, lots of good ole funky organ grooves.
One final note, the covers are ultra ugly, blinding really. They look like the
awful tiger stripe designs that the NFL teams have adopted recently. Take a
trip down to your record store and you'll see what I mean. At least the music
far out shines the covers.
